The National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) in FICCI building in central Delhiwas gutted by a massive fire on early Tuesday.

Forty fire engines were deployed to fight the fire in which six fire officials fell ill after inhaling excessive smoke during the four-hour operation to control the blaze.

Many exhibits like herpetological specimens and taxidermied animals have been gutted.

The NMNH in New Delhi was a key museum focusing on nature in India. It had precious exhibits focusing on India's plants, animals and mineral wealth.

There were four main exhibit galleries: "Cell: The Basic Unit of Life", "Conservation", "Introduction to Natural History", and "Nature's Network: Ecology".
