Swamy and Owaisi debate was all thunder and no light. (2 part video below) |

A debate on India TV brought Subramanian Swamy and Asaduddin Owaisi face-to-face to debate if Muslims were insecure under Modi.
It was a disappointing affair. Age seems to be catching up with Swamy, who was sounding tired and jaded. He limited himself to rehashing pet themes - Saudi Arabia, Kashmiri pandits, uniform civil code, Ram Mandir.
The younger man and energetic Owaisi also stuck to his arguments, all of which have been made before. I follow Indian constitution, I am an Indian - don't ask me about Saudia Arabia, act on Kashmiri pandits, you are in power now.
The only dramatic moment was when Owaisi opposed uniform civil code saying it was a ruse to impose Hanuman chalisa.
Swamy said work on Ram Mandir will start by yearend. Owaisi said let us meet on December 31 and get a reality check.
Sparks flew with the partisan pro-BJP audience, trying to corner Owaisi with cliched dim-witted arguments. He was too prepared and too smart for them.
In sum, Swamy and Owaisi debate was all thunder and no light. But it was heartening to see the two of them make their arguments without getting personal or bitter. That is the way to go.
