A photo of Rajya Sabha member Tarun Vijay lying in a ditch shows the severity the deadly assault he suffered on Friday.
Vijay and a few dalit leaders came under attack at Silgur Devta temple in Chakrata, 180 kilometres from Dehradun.
The temple has been out of bounds for dalits.
A mob of angry villagers pelted stones and manhandled the visitors upset that their tradition had been defiled.
It is not clear if Vijay was pushed into the ditch or ran into it himself while trying to escape the rampaging crowd. Two other persons can be seen in the photo and again it is not clear if they are pursuing him or rushing to his aid.
Vijay has been admitted to a hospital in Dehradun with minor head injuries. There has been cross-party support for his attempt to get entry for dalits into the Silgur Devta temple.
