The Association of Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG), set up by Political consultant
Prashant Kishor, in 2013 to manage PM Narendra Modi's election campaign has come under tax scanner.
Tax authorities have asked CAG to declare details of its income and expenditure for the last four years.
Nirav Rameshchandra Vora, a director of CAG, has been asked to appear in person with income and expenditure ledgers, annual reports, bills, invoices, bank statements and other relevant documents.
Summons were issued in April by the Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence in Nashik, reports The Economic Times.
CAG, registered as a Section 25 or non-profit company, seems to have become inactive after Prashant Kishor fell out with Modi following the 2014 victory.
Prashant Kishor and team formed a new outfit called IPAC (Indian Political Action Committee) to successfully manage Bihar CM Nitish Kumar's election campaign and are now working with Congress in Punjab and UP for the forthcoming assembly polls.
To get Modi elected, CAG had run a huge campaign with 15 state chapters, more than a thousand full time members, and over one lakh volunteers. Functionally it was split into five units - Data & Analytics, Media & External Communications, Research, Digital Communication, and Field Operations - and drew graduates from IITs and IIMs to work in senior positions.
On the website CAG states that they have been funded by individuals and corporations but has not posted any other details regarding its finances.
