Two Odisha youth were recently photographed transporting a dead woman on their bike.
The local media said the two youth, possibly tribals, were too poor to hire any other vehicle to transport the remains of the woman.
They had tightly wrapped the woman in polyethylene sheets and hung her to the bike’s carrier with the support of a cardboard.
The incident occurred in the Jharigaon block of the impoverished Nabarangpur district
The Hindu reported that the woman, from the village Bharuamunda, had allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself. After her post-mortem at the Jharigaon Community Health Centre, the youth were reportedly taking her home.
Nabrangpur District Collector Rashmita Panda, however, told the newspaper that two vehicles were available at Umerkote near Jharigaon to transport the dead woman.
The Hindu also recalled that a dead farmer had been similarly transported on a bike at Nabarangpur a few months ago.
