A photo of Pratapgad fort has gone viral, showing the contrasting quality of civil works under Shivaji 400 years ago and the present-day Maharashtra government. The stone steps built by Shivaji are marked to the year 1656 and they are solid, look like they will go for at least another thousand years without a scratch. There are also steps built by the Maharashtra government dated to 2013. These are brick structures, which have crumbled in three years.
While the viral photo seems to be true, it is not clear if it was the Maharashtra government or ASI, which built the new steps at Pratapgad fort.

Shivaji built his steps with stone so that they would withstand the heavy downpour which Pratapgad fort, in Western ghats, receives every year.

Pratapgad fort, in Satara district, is located 23 kilometres from Mahabaleshwar, a popular hill station in the area.

Shivaji asked his prime minister, Moropant Trimbak Pingle, to build the fort, which was completed in 1656.

Three years later, the Battle of Pratapgarh between Shivaji and Afzal Khan was to be fought below this fort. Shivaji won the battle and laid the foundation for the Maratha empire.

While the viral photo seems to be true, it is not clear if it was the Maharashtra government or ASI, which built the new steps.
The photo shared by a Facebookpage Aap chutiya hain  on Sunday has clocked over 25,000 views.
