Sarabjit Singh on Times Now: Mainstream media
behaves like Twitter mob  (Video below)
Staff correspondent, August 25, 2015, NewsCrunch

A Times Now reporter took on Sarabjit Singh, who came out on bail on Tuesday.

From the word go she treated him as an accused and wanted him to apologise to Jasleen Kaur, the girl who has lodged a complaint against him for abusing her.

Sarabjit Singh, as is his right, firmly stood his ground and refused saying he had not done anything wrong.

The interview quickly degenerated into an argument. The Times Now journalist combative, argumentative and hell bent on extracting an apology, which was just not forthcoming.

To his credit, Sarabjit Singh, who was described as a "pervert" and molester" by many media publications on Monday, kept his cool and stayed polite through out. As a matter of fact he pointed out that the girl did not have evidence to back up her allegations

Calling him arrogant, the Times Now journalist said Jasleen Kaur was right or she would not have gone to the police. So, she wanted Sarabjit Singh and his family to her apologise on camera.

That was a demand she  made repeatedly, which Sarabjit Singh consistently turned down, making her angrier and angrier.

The three-minute video below shows The Times Now journalist occupying more screen time than the man she had gone to interview.

She did not seem to be aware that journalists are expected to be objective and get both sides of the story. Worse, she made her partisan stand clear. At a point, she said that her channel had decided to support Jasleen Kaur.

None of this is to give a clean chit to Sarabjit Singh, whose guilt or innocence will have to be established by the courts. It is to share our alarm that mainstream media has begun to behave like Twitter mob, blatantly taking sides  and projecting facts the way it is convenient to them.

Tail piece

Times Now seems to have picked up a new cause here. In the text which stayed on screen when the interview was telecast, it called Sarabjit Singh a "lout."

Out on bail lout unrepentant - That is how it described Sarabjit Singh. How different is this from those on social media, who slam Jasleen Kaur just because she supports AAP.
