Bollywood star Salman Khan, who created a major controversy on Sunday by coming out in support of Mumbai blast convict Yakub Memon, deleted his controversial tweets and issued an unconditional apology.
Earlier in the day, he had criticised the imminent execution of Yakub Memon saying the hanging of one innocent man would lead to the loss of the entire humanity.
Stating that Tiger Memon was the main culprit of Mumbai blasts, Salman Khan said he should be brought to justice and not his innocent brother. He had even requested Pakistani PM Shariff to surrender Tiger Memon if he was present in his country.
Salman Khan's tweets came under harsh criticism. He was faulted for supporting a convicted terrorist and ignoring the death of hundreds in the blasts. Many said Salman Khan who is also battling out several charges in the court was sympathising with a fellow criminal. The issue also took a communal turn with many saying Salman Khan was supporting a fellow Muslim.
Salman Khan's father Salim, alarmed by the controversy, called up his son and asked him to retract his comments saying they were creating a huge misunderstanding. A dutiful son Salman Khan deleted his tweets and apologised for the controversy.
He said he had faith in the judicial system of the country and reiterated that Tiger Memon should be brought to justice. He also said said he had never called YM innocent and maintained that his tweets did not have any religious angle.
"I respect all faiths and I will always will," he said.
