The barely five year old Punjab Police Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team proved itself by gunning down all the three heavily-armed terrorists who crossed over from Pakistanon Monday.

The Punjab Police SWAT team had already started the operations when NSG arrived. The government took a bold decision to keep Punjab SWAT in-charge and NSG on standby. Indian Army covered the outer ring of the combat zone.

The attack by Pakistani-backed LeT terrorists left eight persons dead. They included three civilians, Superintendent of Police (Detective), Baljit Singh, a Punjab provincial service officer, two home guards and two policemen.

The Punjab Police SWAT arrived at the Dinapur police station, where the terrorists were holed up, and decided not to rush into combat to minimise casualty. They did their recce, assessed the movements of the terrorists, who kept firing indiscriminately, and mounted their attack.

The 12-hour-long-operation eliminated all the three terrorists with zero casualty to SWAT. The Punjab SWAT members emerged shouting their victory chants and uttering Punjab Ki Jai.

Punjab decided to build its own SWAT team to ensure quick response to emergencies especially terror strikes in 2009.

An Israeli company Ultimate Tactical Private Limited, was contracted in 2010 to train them, reports Indian Express. They are equipped with state-of-the-art assault rifles, support weapons, bullet-proof transport, light weight bullet-proof jackets and helmets. Each member carries a hands-free radio set.

The Punjab SWAT team was ready for active deployment in 2011.

Last year, a 30-member team was deployed at Attari border in Amritsar to back-up BSF after terrorists attacked the Paksitani side of the joint check post.

The SWAT team is trained at a discreet camp at Bahadurgarh Fort near Patiala.

At present, Punjab Police have three teams of SWAT, one of which is permanently attached to Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal and deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal.
