Noted Kannada writer Ria Vithasha, 17, has decided to return Karnataka Sahitya Academy award
to protest Kannada rationalist Kalburgi's murder.

The young writer knew Kalburgi personally and was reportedly very upset after he was shot dead.

She had reportedly wanted to return the award some time ago, but had been counselled to be patient, reports PTI. But with so many writers returning their Sahita Akademi awards, the young writer seems to have decided to act.

Ria Vithasha, who writes under the  pen name Muddu Thirthahalli, won  Karnataka Sahitya Academy award for her book of short essays Ondu Chandrana Tundu this year.

Her novel "Kaada Haadiya Hoogalu" has been adapted into an award-winning film, of the same name. The movie released early this year and struck a chord with the audience as it seems to have flowed out of her personal experience.

It tells the story of Hani, who is seen as a problem child by her teachers at an English-medium school. But when she switches to a Kannada-medium government school, the child begins to discover her potential.

Ria Vithasha, is a student of Class XI the Government PU College in Thirthahalli, a small landmark in the Shimoga district, which also gave renowned writer and poet Kuvempu to the world of literature.
