A zoo at Odense, Denmark, publicly dissected a one-year-old male lion on Thursday provoking international criticism.

The dissection was viewed by about 300 children and adults who had gathered at the zoo specially to watch what the zoo officials described as an educational event.

Zoo officials started the dissection by cutting off the lion's tongue and then proceeded to dismember it part by part and display them.

A video of the dissection shows many children standing close-by holding their nose due to the stench.

The Odense Zoo had put down the one-year-old lion in February after failing to find another home for it. its body had been kept in a freezer.

Dissection of wild animals is common in Denmark and all kinds of animals seals, whales, giraffes and so on have been dealt with heavy knives to enlighten the public.

Last year, Copenhagenzoo officials killed an 18-month old giraffe, did a public autopsy, and then fed him to lions.  His crime: he had commonplace genes for a giraffe and was not considered  good breeding material.

While animal rights groups have criticised Danish dissections as macabre acts, officials say Denmarkwas an agricultural society, which never humanised animals.
