Karnataka BJP leader Eshwarappa landed in a controversy on Saturday when he reportedly made a frivolous statement on women getting raped.
While interacting with media, he told a woman journalist that the opposition party would be helpless if someone dragged and raped her.
Eshwarappa, a noted leader of kuruba community, has been a senior minister and a president of State unit of BJP.
He had gone to attend the funeral of Sub Inspector Jagdish, who had been murdered on Friday, by gangsters at a nearby town Doddaballapura.
When Eshwarappa was speaking to the media, a woman TV journalist asked him why the opposition was not alerting the government on the security situation in the Karnataka.
It was this question, which drew a thoughtful response from Eshwarappa and sent him viral on a dull Saturday afternoon.
Thus, he told her: “If someone drags and rapes you, we (the Opposition parties) would be somewhere else – so, what can we do? You tell? “
After TV channels started playing up his controversial remarks, Eshwarappa clarified that Opposition would do everything in its power to ensure women’s security.
While he considered all Karnataka women as his sisters, the news was being created to trigger confusion, Eshwarappa said.
