Piling more pressure on the beleaguered government, The New York Times has written a stinging editorial slamming Modi for letting the hardliners in BJP take over the show.

It says Modi is willing to tolerate, even encourage, the Hindu hard-liners in his own party.

The editorials of the influential publication usually set the mood for the western press and governments. They go under the byline The editorial Board and reflects the collective wisdom of the newspaper.

The NYT edit takes note of rising intolerance in India and the murder of noted rationalist Kalburgi.

It also records the massive response in the country to Hindu hardliners - from writers , artists, filmmakers, scientists and names the recent statements of Narayana Murthy, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw and Shahrukh Khan on the subject.

It says the disquiet has spread to the business community, making investors wary.
