Dalai Lama comments on rising intolerance in the country (Video below)

November 15, 2015, NewsCrunch

Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama hailed Bihar election results on Saturday and said the outcome showed that majority of Hindus believed in harmony.

Attending the convocation of a private university at Jalandhar, Dalai Lama made the statement while responding to a question on intolerance.

Despite a few "mischievous elements" and "a few problems", he said, India had stood by its value system of secularism and harmony.

"Bihar elections have proved that majority of Indian people still believe in harmony," he added.

He did not name any party or go into the specific incidents he was responding to.

The Times of India quoted him saying as the longest staying guest of India he did not want to get into its politics.

He also said there could be a few problems but overall the situation was very good and India had been following the principles of Ahimsa and harmony.

On Sunday, Dalai Lama's statements grew into  a controversy after BJP leader Subramanian Swamy criticised him. "His statements are uncalled for and shows his ignorance," Swamy said.
