Bollywood actor Aamir Khan came down heavily against growing intolerance in the country on Monday going to the extent of saying his wife Kiran wanted to move out of the country.

He said she was afraid of opening the newspapers and feared for the future of their child.

There was a growing sense of despondency and depression in him, he added. Aamir was referring to the incidents of violence in the last seven or eight months, which he described as alarming.

The superstar was speaking at the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards. He addressed a room full of top journalists and senior politicians from different parties drawing applause almost continuously.

Express scion Anant Goenka struggled to steer the conversation, but Aamir had come prepared to say what he wanted to.

While the media reports have highlighted Aamir’s comments on Kiran, his arguments were much more nuanced.

He supported artists returning awards saying everyone had a right to protest in any manner as long as it was non violent. The alarming number of incidents had prompted them to speak out, he said

He said people need assurance that the justice system worked to punish the guilty and elected representatives stood there to protect everyone.

When asked if he would become more articulate to represent moderate Muslims, he said as an Indian he would represent everyone not just Muslims.

“My birth may be in a Muslim household, but I speak for everyone,” Aamir said.
