Samajwadi Party has stepped forward to support Aamir Khan, who is under attack from Hindutva groups for his comments on intolerance.
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has said he would be inviting Aamir Khan to the Saifai Mahotsav, Samajwadi Party's annual cultural festival at Mulayam Singh Yadav's ancestral village in Etawah district.
Saifai Mahotsav is a key event on SP calendar, which usually features A-list Bollywood stars, and is attended by over a lakh party supporters.
Getting Aamir Khan to attend the festival would go down well with SP's key constituency Muslims, who empathise with the actor's statement that his wife Kiran wanted to leave India due to growing intolerance..
But Akhilesh Yadav did not make any reference to the controversy. He said Aamir Khan was being invited to Saifai Mahotsav as he was from Uttar Pradesh, reports The Telegraph.
The actor has an ancestral house at Hardoi. Interestingly, Akhilesh Yadav made the statement at Hardoi, where he had gone to attend a wedding.
