The heart surgeon says he started noticing the differences between the lungs when he was carrying out heart operations and decided to photograph them.
“Delhi lungs have a huge amount of charcoal deposit, it's what we call almost black lungs,” he told India Today in an interview.
“
In contrast, people from rural or hilly areas like those from Himachal Pradesh have normal lungs. Their lungs look pink as there's blood flowing through it exchanging oxygen.
The devastation of theDelhi lungs is due to exposure to pollution for prolonged periods of time. Children are particularly vulnerable as their tissues are multiplying faster than adults.
A decade ago Dr Naresh Trehan had shown similar pictures to Supreme Court judge Kuldip Singh, who had then decided to give a big push to make CNG mandatory in Delhi for public transport.
