Google Doodle is celebrating what would have been the 97th birthday of B K S Iyengar, the guru who took yoga to the West.
Iyengar Yoga, a simplified sequence of Patanjali Yoga, which is named after him, is today taught in more than 70 countries.
Not a small feat for a man, who started his life’s journey as poor and sickly child, at a remote part of Karnataka.
He was taught yoga by a relative to help him overcome his health problems. Along the way, B K S Iyengar realised that he was a gifted communicator, who could teach intricacies of Patanjali Yoga to rank newbies.
During his long career he developed an illustrious band of followers, which could boast of names like Aldous Huxley, Yehudi Menuhin and Quen Elizabeth of Bekgium.
His personal commitment to Yoga, which made him practice daily with all the zeal of a rookie, remained till he passed away last year.
The video below was shot in 1977, when B K S Iyengar was 59. It shows him striking posture after posture with the physical flexibility of a teenager.
