A 59-year-old Sikh, Amrik Singh, defended his petrol station from an armed robber by throwing his slipper at him.
The slipper hit the robber, a white man in mask, on his nose, throwing him off guard. A CCTV footage shows an emboldened Amrik Singh rushing to confront the robber, who manages to flee.
The incident took place at Staatsburg, near New York City.
Amrik Singh, an immigrant from Punjab’s Moga district, has owned the Citgo petrol station and store for 19 years.
He says he did not plan to confront the robber and planned to hand over all his money.
But the robber demanded $100 dollar bills, which he did not have. When the armed man reached for the tray in the cash register, Amrik Singh reacted spontaneously by reaching for his now famous weapon, slipper.
The CCTV footage of his bravery has gone viral and been aired by several TV channels in the US.
A US citizen, Amrik Singh, is sufficiently shaken up to apply for a gun license.
