Outspoken progressive thinker M M Kalburgi was shot dead at his residence in Dharwad on Sunday morning.

Two unidentified men shot at him from a pointblank range  after knocking on the door of his house.

Kalburgi was rushed to the civil hospital where he was declared brought dead. A video uploaded by Kannada daily Udayavani shows the police bringing out Kalburgi's body from the district hospital.

Throughout his career Kalburgi had battled religious fanatics with his advocacy of rational thought.

He had a confrontational relationship with Hindutva groups such as VHP and Bajrang Dal, who had opposed his comments on idol worship by Hindus.

A noted Kannada scholar, epigraphist and researcher, M M Kalburgi was a former vice chancellor of Hampi University. He had specialised in the Vachana literature, though his writings on the subject was not popular with the Lingayats, the  majority community of Karnataka.

Born in 1938, Kalburgi had won Sahitya Akademi, Karnataka State Sahitya Akademi, Nrupatunga Award and the Pampa Awards.

Kalburgi is the third rationalist to be assassinated in India in the last three years. Early this year Govind Pansare, a Maharashtra communist leader was shot dead by unknown assailants. Two years ago, well-known rationalist Narendra Dabholkar had also been killed.

None of these killers have been caught till now.

On Saturday, when the rest of India celebrated  Raksha Bandhan by tying rakhi, the villagers at Devidhura in Champawat district of Uttarakhand took part in their annual stone pelting Bagwal festival.

As the Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat watched, two groups of devotees threw stones at each other. The large wooden shields they had built to protect themselves were not of much use and media reports say nearly 150 people were injured.

Located at 45 kms from Lohaghat in the Champawat district of Uttarakhand, Devidhura's Bagwal festival attracts people from Kumaon, Nepal, and other places.

Bagwal festival starts with the worship of local goddess Barahi, whose idol from a temple is brought out in the open. It is then the devotees pelt stones at each other to please goddess Barahi.

The belief is that the blood, which is shed during the festival, appeases the goddess to fulfill their wishes.

Makuta VFX gives breakup of computer generated imagery in Bahubali (Video below)

Staff correspondent, August 30, 2015, NewsCrunch

Makuta VFX, the company behind the mesmerising scenes in mega hit Bahubali has released a behind-the-scenes video, revealing the secrets of the movie.

A key to the Bahubali success were the enchanting water fall scenes with which the movie begins and manages to sustain the momentum.

Makuta VFX recaps the key shots of the waterfall scenes and shows how they were assembled.

All the enactments - Prabhas leaping across the cliffs and Anushka swaying to the waterfall - were shot in the studio. Then they were overlaid with the select  footage from the waterfall, immersed digitally using sophisticated  effects to make them, well, enchanting.

Makuta VFX, which has offices in Santa Clara and Hyderabad, was also  the company that made Rajamouli's Eega, another visual effects-rich movie.

It won the National Film Awards in 2010 and 2012 for "Magadheera", and Eega respectively.

Why Hogenakal Falls has become a deathtrap for tourists - 30 deaths so far this year (With video)

With the latest tragedy, up to 30 people have lost their lives in Hogenakal Falls this year. (Video below)

Staff correspondent, August 31, 2015, NewsCrunch

Six members of a Chennai family, including two children,  drowned after their coracle capsized in Hogenakkal on Sunday.

With the latest tragedy, up to 30 people have lost their lives in Hogenakal Falls this year.

Hogenakal Falls is a popular tourist attraction where people take long rides on bamboo coracles, which are inherently unstable. Many children and women in sarees, the worst garment to wear when you enjoy a water ride, are among the tourists who take to water.

Life jackets are worn out or not used at all, and most can't swim. The water is deep and the current strong. So, accidents happen frequently.

The local administration has installed buzzers to warn tourists about dangerous spots and blocked access to a hazardous hanging bridge. But the measures seem to have been inadequate and the local tourist operators and coracle boatmen, by and large, run the show without checks, fleecing visitors.

On Sunday's accident, one report said the boatman abandoned the coracle after water seeped in. Another said the coracle tilted after the tourists gathered for a selfie. Both the scenarios  could  have been avoided with an efficient administration.

It is time the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka governments replaced coracles with modern boats and kept a close watch on the area. Anymore accidents would be shameful.

The United Arab Emirates may seek ISRO's expertise in launching its Mars mission.

ISRO's unmanned Mars mission Mangalayan has been hailed as a cost-effective technological feat by the space community around the world.

The Economic Times reports that when the UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan visits Delhi this week, he may initiate talks on the proposal.

Al-Nahyan is expected to lead a 83-member delegation, including top officials of the UAE's space agency.

UAE runs a nine-year-old space programme, which was recently  brought under the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC). It has launched four satellites - DubaiSat-1, DubaiSat-2, Khalifasat and Nayif-1 - in collaboration with foreign countries.

UAE is now working on an Emirates Mars Mission, which would launch an unmanned probe to attain Mars orbit by 2021. The probe, named Hope (Amal in Arabic), will conduct tests to profile Martian atmosphere.

While ISRO has been trying to commercialise its expertise through its marketing arm Antrix, it would be in talks with a Gulf country for the first time.

The Economic Times said UAE is keen on working with India as it would be more cost-effective than joining hands with Europe or the USA.

Carrying a condom in Indiawas a man’s job.

A gentleman or at least a cautious person always put a couple of rubbers in his pocket. It was a socially responsible thing to do to protect health or help his woman avoid later complications.

This last bastion – the privilege of carrying condoms - has just crumbled thanks to a nice short video clip made by Bright Canvas films, Why Girls Should Carry Condoms!

Given that sex is no big deal for young Indians now, it pays to be prepared. And that message is from both women and men.

The video shows a flock of pigeons fluttering away merrily and dropping their waste freely soiling those walking below.

A pretty young girl is shown walking on a busy street ruled by pigeons. She comes to a spot where there is a danger of getting hit. Voila! She opens an umbrella and winks.

A message flashes on the screen: Shit happens, be prepared.

Released on August 20, the video has done well. It has generated over 143,000 views on YouTube.

Pakistanis having a bhakt moment. Like our own NDTV, which is often slammed as a Pakistani channel for its Adarsh liberal stance, Dawn is being called an Indian newspaper.

Pakistan TV actor Faisal Qureshi, who uploads popular video commentaries on his Facebook page questioned the highly regarded Dawn ‘s patriotism recently.

Its crime:  It had publishedan article by Faraz Talat, who had come down heavily on Faisal Qureshi’s review of Phantom.

Faisal Qureshi had released a longish 12-minute video review of Phantom, a jingoistic and badly made Indian movie. In his critique he had matched jingoism with jingoism and played to the gallery.

Faraz Talat had charged Faisal Qureshi with putting forward an ugly face of Pakistanwith his chest-thumping and bald-faced muscle-flexing response.

Faraz Talat had noted that the politically ignorant Faisal Qureshi was unable to make any point without resorting to insults and was guilty of raging misogynism as well.

Faisal Qureshi had used words like “sahiba” and “bachi” to attack Saif Ali Khan.

Faisal Qureshi hit back asking if Dawn was a Pakistani newspaper or blatantly Indian? Even the worst kind of Pakistani could not have written this article, he wrote, inviting Faraz Talat for a no-holds barred debate in Lahore.

A video clip by 9 News interviews him and shows his charity work.

Tejinder Pal Singh says he uses 10% of his income to help the poor as mandated by his religion. He says the religion of those who benefit from his generosity does not matter.

On the last Sunday of every month he cooks 30 kgs of rice, daal and vegetables, and takes them to different locations at the city and distributes for free.

The work gives him more energy, he says. Those wanting to launch similar food drives in their locality can borrow his van, he adds.

Indian cricketer Ishant Sharma created a memorable viral moment when he slapped his own head a few times after getting Lanka batsman Dinesh Chandimal’s wicket on Monday at Colombo.

The lively moment caught on camera is going viral and created a buzz on social media.

Ishant Sharma, who has been having a good match, got into skirmishes with several Lankan players including Chandimal.

Early in the day when Ishant Sharma was in a tense argument with Lanka pacer Dhammika Prasad, Chandimal had joined in the fight. He grazed Ishant Sharma while passing by and made a few comments of his own.

So, when Ishant Sharma had Chandimal caught by Virat Kohli in the 7th over, he went a little overboard with his response.

Ishant Sharma had earlier provoked Dhammika Prasad, who was trying to pitch bouncers. After he sent a couple of them Ishant Sharma tapped his helmet mockingly telling the fast bowler to aim better.

Aashiqui was a heartache, which failed to give a break to Anu Aggarwl and Rahul Roy, but Honey Singh, Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor fail to re-create its magic

Staff correspondent, August 31, 2015, NewsCrunch

To mark the 25th anniversary of the 1990 blockbuster, Aashiqui, Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor have reenacted its hit song 'Dheere Dheere.’

Unfortunately, the music has also been reprised by Honey Singh, who brings his remix skills but sticks to the original only in the chorus.

Hrithik Roshan, despite his Johnny Bravo hair, matches step with the the gorgeous Sonam Kapoor. The re-creation is vastly more opulent but fails to bring in the intensity of the original.

The original Aashiqui stood mostly on the strength of its music, which made the careers of singer Kumar Sanu and composers Nadeem-Shravan.

Rahul Roy failed to take-off despite a dream debut, Anu Agarwal unfortunately drifted to a destined nirvana.

Bur all in all, Aashiqui was a heartache largely due to its music led by Dheere Dheere. That is a magic that cannot be reprised.

He then tweeted again saying someone had hacked his Twitter account and made him follow sex sites.

He is mum on when his Twitter account got hacked or when it came to his notice.

A Reddit user had found more than a year ago that Amitabh Bachchan was following porn accounts Stifler and Horny Facts and even sparked off a small discussion.

Buzz feed reported on Monday that Big B was also following "Sex Facts of Life” and “Male Thoughts” but has since trimmed his follower count to 984. For the record, Male Thoughts does not qualify as a porn account.

That brings us to the mystery of Kattappa proportions - how did Amitabh Bachchan fail to notice the porn that was popping up on his timeline. Or, why did he let out a scream on Monday saying his Twitter account had been hacked.

After Kannada writer Kalburgi's murder, fellow rationalist K S Bhagwan, who was threatened by a Bajrang Dal activist,  is in limelight.

But K S Bhagwan, who has been living under police cover in Mysore since February this year, is unperturbed.

Speaking to The Indian Express K S Bhagwan, says he started facing threats 35 years ago, when he wrote a book on Shankaracharya. He had described the Kerala religious leader as the father of Hindu fundamentalism for denying education to lower castes and women.

A retired English literature lecturer from Maharaja’s College in Mysore, K S Bhagwan, 70, is a regular in the seminars and conferences where  he takes on various dogmas without inhibition.

In February this year, he had triggered a huge controversy at a function organised by an association of SC/ST government employees in Mysore.

Saying Bhagawad Gita was a dangerous treatise, he had volunteered to burn it. It took all the persuasion skills of the State Revenue Minister V Srinivas Prasad to stop him from actually doing so.

K S Bhagwan was responding to BJP leader and Central Minister Sushma  Swaraj's call to declare Bhagawad Gita a national book.

His actions received wide publicity and Hindu groups went on protest prompting Mysore police to put him under security.

The Mysore police had placed a City Armed Reserve (CAR) van with five to six police personnel outside Prof. Bhagwan’s residence. They now plan to make a fresh threat assessment and scale it up if required, reports The Hindu.

The new  threat  does not seem to have dampened K S Bhagwan's spirits. He says the properties of the Hindutva agitators should be taken away. Beggars will worry about filling their stomach, not agitating, he says.

Indrani Mukerjea's first partner Siddhartha Das has surfaced and contrary to the earlier reports he is not a tea estate magnate with interests in West Bengal and Tripura.

Siddhartha Das, the biological father of the murdered daughter Sheena Bora and her brother Michail, works for a handicrafts company near EM Bypass in Kolkata as a factory manager earning Rs 15,000 a month.

The Telegraph failed to speak to Siddhartha Das, but managed to reach out to the factory owner.

Siddhartha Das told Times Now that Indrani Mukerjea left in 1989 after living with him for three years. Sheena and Michail were born out of wedlock, he said.

She left him as she was money-minded and he was just an ordinary person, Siddhartha Das added.

Changing equations - Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor in Jagga Jasoos

Staff correspondent, September 1, 2015, NewsCrunch

Bollywood couple Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor are evading questions on marriage not due to their career commitments but because they are reportedly fighting a lot.

Quoting a source, Bollywood Life reports that Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor are going through a tense phase in their relationship with frequent fights flaring up over all sorts of issues - from their day to day affairs to professional commitments.

Ranbir Kapoor is said to be worked up about his career, which suffered a setback with the washout of Bombay Velvet. He is also said to be tense about his forthcoming movie Tamasha. He fears that if that also fails, his career would be finished.

In contrast, Katrina Kaif is on a high with the recent success of Phantom. Her inability to juggle dates to the belated venture Jagga Jasoos, in which she stars with Ranbir Kapoor, also seems to be an irritant.

As Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor consistently evade questions on their relationship every small talk or gesture from them gets interpreted wildly in the media.

Katrina Kaif recently skipped Ranbir Kapoor’s fashion show reportedly to party with her friends. At the same event Ranbir Kapoor said Katrina Kaif had a great dressing sense - but so did Kareena, Priyanka, Parineeti, Alia and Shraddha, he pointed out.

For the media looking for a juicy copy all of these amount to signs of an impending breakup.

In typical entertainment reporting Bollywood Life did not identify the source, which revealed that Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor were fighting a lot. But the story was deemed credible enough to be picked up by other publications.

(Video below)

Staff correspondent, September 1, 2015, NewsCrunch

Here is a winner of a video, powerful and with a message that you will make you support a cause that is crying for attention – banning open sale of acids.

The video Beauty Tips by Reshma: How to get perfect red lips runs just over a minute. Like all great short videos the twist is in the end. When it comes you are left shattered.

Reshma Qureshi, an acid attack survivor, gives tips on how to apply lipstick. Remove dead skin, use a lip balm, a liner and don’t apply on the edges.

Then comes the final tip:

You can buy a red lipstick anywhere just like acid, which disfigures a girl everyday.

She then asks you to sign a petition for banning opens sale of acid.

Ironically, the Supreme Court banned the open sale of acid in July 2013, and gave the central and state governments three months to enforce the ban. But this seems to have not happened on the ground prompting Make Love Not Scars start this campaign.

Make Love Not Scars is a website, which highlights the plight of the acid attack survivors and helps mobilise support for them.

Reshma Qureshi was disfigured and lost an eye when her estranged brother-in-law and his friends pinned her down and poured acid on her face.

She had earlier featured in another video Reshma - The Brave Beauty to draw attention on acid attacks.
