Hollywood actress Meryl Streep has thrown her weight behind India's Daughter, a documentary on Delhi rape victim Nirbhaya, which is already seen as a front-runner to grab an Oscar next  year.

India's Daughter, which chronicles the rape and murder of Nirbhaya, has been banned in India.

Streep, a women's rights activist, said in New York on Friday that she was on a "campaign" to get India's Daughter nominated in the category of best documentary. She said when she first saw the film, she could not speak for sometime.

The documentary, produced by BBC and directed by film-maker Leslee Udwin, has been described by the Modi government as " a conspiracy to defame India".

The documentary has also been blocked on video sites such as YouTube in the country, though many have viewed it using proxy servers.

The government ban and a chance to highlight the issue of women's safety that may prompt the Oscar jury to give India's daughter a serious consideration.

The documentary controversially  interviewed one of the rapists, Mukesh Singh, who blamed Nirbhaya ofr going out in the evening with a male friend. A decent girl would not have roamed at nine o'clock at night, he had claimed.

Bollywood legend Smita Patil would have been 60 today.

She died nearly 30 years ago after a very short but dazzling career in Bollywood. She spent a little over a decade in her career till tragically passing away at child birth.

Why do people still remember her?  She was a fine actress, among the best of her generation, who was lucky to find movies that let her being out her talent  - Manthan, Bhumika, Aakrosh, Chakra, Chidambaram and Mirch Masala.

She successfully crossed over to mainstream cinema and acted with the leading men of her time - Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan.

There was also an enormous personality about Smita Patil that left behind an impression and does not wash away easily. Starting as a news reader, she would go in jeans and t-shirt to studio and drape over a saree there. That rare streak stayed through out her career.

Here is a competent DD-style documentary to get a feel of what she did. It is factual, descriptive and narrated as if they are selling aspirin. You may not get any insight into the Smita Patil's enduring persona, but it does get the point across.

Florida police struggled to arrest a wanted man in Jacksonville after his girl friend kept them at distance saying she wanted to have sex for the last time.

Police reached the mobile home of Ryan Patrick Bautista, who was wanted for armed burglary, at 9.30 pm on Wednesday. But Bautista, who was locked inside with his girl friend, Leanne Hunn, refused to come out.

As a SWAT team was called to the scene, officials started negotiating with the accused to make him surrender. During a phone conversation, Leanne told cops that she would turn herself in after having intercourse with Bautista a final time, reported The Florida Times-Union

After a night-long stand off, the officials finally entered the mobile home and arrested the couple at 4 a.m. on Thursday.
Two other women were in the mobile home and were not allowed by Leanne to leave. Bautista and Leanne have been charged with resisting arrest without violence and false imprisonment.

Bollywood top actress Kareena Kapoor Khan is set to announce that she would be acting in a Pakistani movie, to be directed by acclaimed director,  Shoaib Mansoor.

Though Pakistani artists frequently feature in Bollywood, it would be a first for a major Bollywood name to act in a Pakistani film.

Mid Day reports that Kareena Kapoor will be off to Dubai next week to meet Mansoor for a formal script narration and sign the movie. She has already read and liked the script, which has a women-oriented theme.

Reports also suggest the movie would be produced by Krishika Lulla of Eros, who has also made the upcoming Shah Rukh Khan movie Dilwale.

Pakistan's film industry, which makes a dozen movies a year, would be too small to handle a major Bollywood name. It would possibly be made as a crossover film to ensure it finds good reception in Indiaas well.

One of Mansoor’s earlier films Khuda Kay Liye had featured Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah and released in about 100 screens in India

Ex BJP Minister Eshwarappa – loose talk on women’s safety

October 17, 2015, NewsCrunch

Karnataka BJP leader Eshwarappa landed in a controversy on Saturday when he reportedly made a frivolous statement on women getting raped.

While interacting with media, he told a woman journalist that the opposition party would be helpless if someone dragged and raped her.

Eshwarappa, a noted leader of kuruba community, has been a senior minister and a president of State unit of BJP.

He had gone to attend the funeral of Sub Inspector Jagdish, who had been murdered on Friday, by gangsters at a nearby town Doddaballapura.

When Eshwarappa was speaking to the media, a woman TV journalist asked him why the opposition was not alerting the government on the security situation in the Karnataka.

It was this question, which drew a thoughtful response from Eshwarappa and sent him viral on a dull Saturday afternoon.

Thus, he told her: “If someone drags and rapes you, we (the Opposition parties) would be somewhere else – so, what can we do? You tell? “

After TV channels started playing up his controversial remarks, Eshwarappa clarified that  Opposition would do everything in its power to ensure women’s security.

While he considered all Karnataka women as his sisters, the news was being created to trigger confusion, Eshwarappa said.

Konkona Sen Sharma and Tilotama Shome, an unlikely pair, become close friends – their kids are classmates. Konkona is a globe trotter, while Tilotama is a meek, middleclass apologetic homemaker. As Konkona opens up her dream world – a world of global travel, expensive liquor, romance – Tilotama increasingly comes under her influence.

Tilotama, whose idea of fun is going to kitty parties, accepts her lot, but appreciates what Konkona has in her life. A college crush Gulshan Devaiah invites her to catch up, which gives her a chance to play Konkona’s life momentarily.

Konkona turns Tilotama into a glam doll, doing her hair, sharing her dress and an expensive necklace. When she meets Gulshan Devaiah she parrots the lines she has heard from Konkona  – the travel, the five star hotels and in the process even uses Konkona’s son’s name when talking about her own.

When she goes to return the necklace, the reality behind Konkona’s pretentions explode in her face, making her shudder, pause and think.  A must watch.

A Kashmiri MBA graduate, Sameer Gojwari, has announced that he would not accept his degree from Union HRD minister Smriti Irani at Monday's convocation, though her participation is yet to be officially confirmed.

Sameer Gojwari, who has passed out of Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), said his decision was in protest against  "diminishing freedoms" in the country.

In his Facebook post he referred to the decision of writers across India returning their awards to protest curbs on freedom of speech, among other things.

As  he wrote in a post: "Though, for a student, receiving a master's degree is no less than any prestigious award. But on October 19, (the Convocation Day) I Sameer Gojwari won't accept it,"

IUST is holding its first convocation on Monday and Gojwari, reportedly completed his MBA in 2008. It is not clear why he is being invited to receive his degree now.

Sameer Gojwari's Facebook post not only received wide media coverage but also drew mixed response on social media. While fellow Kashmiris  supported, angry mainland Indians slammed his act, which they thought was provocative.

Sameer Gojwari's social media posts hint that he does fit into the standard notions of "anti-national Kashmiri." He is indeed critical of Indian occupation of Kashmir, but also talks of status of women, development and is  fond of quoting Gandhi.

Urdu poet Munawwar Rana returned the Sahitya Akademi award, to protest the growing religious intolerance in India, on live TV.

The 62-year-old poet had been awarded the Sahitya Akademi in 2014 for his book 'Shahdaba'.

He also returned the Rs one lakh cheque given by the Akademi and said he would not accept any award from the government in the future.

Munawwar Rana said that while many writers had been associated with some party or the other, he had always been apolitical.

"Though I come from Rae Bareli, where politics runs through the street drains, I never cared for it," he said.

He expressed fears that he may be targeted and labelled as a Pakistani as he was a Muslim.

"Many areas in this country are not linked with electricity but Muslims here are linked to Dawood Ibrahim," the poet said.

Munawwar Rana's words proved prophetic as he started trending on social media and drew fire from the trolls.

Hindi writer Kashinath also returned the Akademi award on Sunday in response to the "irresponsible" comments by various ministers on writers who had given up their awards.

Unable to cope with surging crowd Kolkata police wants to shut down puja at Deshapriya Park, which had installed a gigantic Durga idol.

The 88-feet idol erected by Deshapriya Park Durgotsav Committee is said to be the tallest Durga idol in the world.  .

On Sunday, there was a mad rush  to see the idol with lakhs of devotees thronging the area. The rush created a near stampede situation and disrupted  traffic in the area for hours.

The Deshapriya Park Durgotsav Committee has been running an advertising campaign promoting the  idol heavily as the tallest in the world. While the campaign managed to draw devotees in record number, the Kolkata police were caught unprepared.

With no effective crowd management measure, the Sunday's crowd turned hazardous and a major disaster was luckily averted.

The Telegraph reported that Kolkata police commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha has hinted that the puja would not be reopened this year and advised people to go to other pujas.

If implemented, the shut down would be unprecedented in Kolkata's recent history.

Shiv Sena workers on Monday stormed the office of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI),
to protest a scheduled meeting between BCCI chief Shashank Manohar and Pak cricket board head Shahryar Khan.

The attack took place just before Shahryar Khan was scheduled to meet Shashank Manohar. The agenda of the meeting was to discuss the resumption of ties between India and Pakistan, which Shiv Sena opposes tooth and nail.

As an NDTV video below shows, the Shiv Sainiks surrounded Shashank Manohar's table and made their points vehemently with arguments and placards. After staying long enough for the TV cameras to capture the protest, they retreated noisily though peacefully without vandalising the office.

They also did not try to blacken Shashank Manohar's face, a treatment meted  out to Sudheendra Kulkarni recently when he had organised the book launch of former Pakistan foreign minister Khurshid Kasuri.

Matt Keith and his girl friend Emily were hauled up by protesters at a restaurant when they noticed the tattoo. (Video below)

October 19, 2015, NewsCrunch

Goddess Yellamma hit national news on Monday after a flash protest broke out against an Australian student for sporting a Goddess Yellamma tattoo on his shin.

Matt Keith and his girl friend Emily were hauled up by protesters at a restaurant when they noticed the tattoo.

Media reports said the protesters wanted to remove the tattoo by skinning him. The police reportedly sided with the protesters, allegedly led by a BJP leader. The couple were taken to a police station where an apology letter was extracted from Matt.

A video of the fracas between Australians and the protesters has surfaced.

The main protester is seen asking Matt to remove the tattoo; the word “skinning” is not used in the conversation. Another protester asks Matt to wear a pant to cover up the tattoo. The lone policeman in the frame looks confused and nervous. He mumbles asking Matt to remove the tattoo.

The Australians in the video look far from being fearful for their life. Emily is heard screaming while an Indian friend, who is mediating, asks her to calm down in English spoken in thick Kannada accent.

At just one minute long, the video possibly does not capture the full story.

But if we what we see in it held good throughout, the controversy is overblown. The protesters could have been nicer, the Austraian could have been more sensitive and the cop could have spoken shown some spine.

Hindus do take offense when their gods are depicted on legs and slippers.  Is a tattoo on the shin offensive – answer is subjective to your point of view.

A senior police officer was also quoted saying the issue was trivial. We side with that. Let Matt carry on in India, but keeping his tattoo covered.
