Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has reportedly signed an MoU with the Tirumala temple to conduct scientific research on Vedas.

The agreement was signed between India's premier defence research agency's missile tech unit (RCI)-DRDO and Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), reports Bangalore Mirror.

The Hyderabad-based (RCI)-DRDO runs sophisticated labs that work on Guided Missile Systems and it is not clear what they will do under the MOU.

DRDO scientists are not giving out details, says Mirror.

DRDO scientists have dabbled in religion in the past as well though without authorisation.

A DRDO Pune team had worked for a year using large amounts of silver to build the motorised chariot and donated it to AlandiTemplein Pune. The project, which had not been sanctioned, had cost DRDO Rs 5 crore, Indian Express had reported.

The DRDO Tirumala temple pact seems to be in line with Modi government push to get scientists involved in the study of ancient Indian developments.

Water Resources Minister Uma  Bharti had recently directed scientists at National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) to research if the origin of Saraswati could be traced to Kailash Mansarovar.

Lahore TV station City 42’s senior reporter Qaisar Khokar’s frenzied coverage of PM Modi’s surprise visit to Lahore has gone viral.

The Pak reporter was assigned to cover Modi’s visit. Instead of getting into the nitty-gritty of it, he accuses Modi and his team of visiting Pakistan without visas.

He looks alarmed on TV and is breathless. He is concerned about 120 Indians roaming on streets of Lahorewithout any visa.

“The Parliament of Pakistan, Supreme Court and citizens of the country are just looking on," he says.

Qaisar Khokar interjects his sentences 'tauba tauba', which can be roughly translated as God Forbid.

His reporting has even his colleagues at the studios in splits while he carries on unmindfully.

Qaisar Khokar reminds of another Pak reporter Chand Pasha whose viral video had inspired a key character in Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

After the Salman Khan movie became a hit, Chand Nawab became a celebrity in both sides of the border.

December 26, 2015, NewsCrunch

The concluding episode of Al Jazeera’s flagship show turned out to be its most gripping.

Titled Is Modi's India flirting with fascism? Head to Head took aim at the phenomenal rise of Hindutva nationalism in India.

It had the articulate host Mehdi Hasan; a panel of three - Dr Nitasha Kaul,  Dr Gautam Sen and Mehboob Khan - two of whom were opposed to Hindutva. It had a diverse audience, by and large, disposed against RSS ideology.

And there was Ram Madhav, former RSS spokesperson who is on loan to BJP as General Secretary.

If you don’t like RSS, the show had all the questions you always wanted to ask the Hindutva fountain head: From the immediate – Dadri lynching -- to the big picture – place of minorities in India.

Ram Madhav is not the most suave or scholarly of the RSS leaders. But he is a true believer and endlessly combative.

He disowned the indefensible, tried to make right noise before an international audience. But there was too much of a missionary in him to sit on the fence.

Yes, Taj Mahal was creation of a Hindu culture, Mughals were occupiers, minorities need the goodwill of majority to survive, there was nothing wrong in Modi’s puppy comment.

He did get flustered even nervous occasionally, but took all questions on his chin.

December 27, 2015, NewsCrunch

The surprise visit of PM Modi to Lahore to wish his counterpart Nawaz Sharif on his birthday made it to the New York Times front page in a big way.

It was the lead photo on page 1, spread across four columns.

For the photo-savvy and publicity-weak Modi there has been no bigger foreign policy and media triumph so far.

For Sharif, it is good to be in the limelight for the right  reasons.

The coverage shows how paranoid the western world is about the prospects of a nuclear confrontation between the two traditional rivals in South Asia.

The NYT report said Modi placed a private call to wish Sharif on Friday morning to wish him a happy birthday and landed in Lahore four hours later. His impromptu visit was so sudden even Sharif’s national security adviser could not make the journey from Islamabad in time.

While several studies claim that mornings are the best time to have sex, an hormone expert claims it is actually afternoons, 3 pm to be precise.

It has been traditionally held that in the mornings men and women are sufficiently rested. Men also produce testosterone, when they sleep, which is a key hormone in sexual arousal and performance.

Testosterone levels peak between early to mid-morning, which is as many believe is the best time for men to have sex.

But Daily Mail reports that Alisa Vitti, author of the hormone guide WomanCode, makes a counter intuitive argument.

Around 3 pm women have high levels of the hormone cortisol, which makes them alert, energetic and receptive.

By that time the level of testosterone in men begins to dip but their oestrogen shoots up, making them ‘more emotionally present’ during sex, which is what women crave from their partners.

But for couples planning babies, mornings continue to be ideal mating time.

Tamilar Munnetra Padai members burnt Amy Jackson's effigy and tried  to march to the Nadigar Sangam office in T. Nagar, which is the headquarters of Tamil Nadu film industry association .

The Chennai police had to arrest 30 members to get the situation under control

The founder of Tamilar Munnetra Padai K. Veeralakshmi demanded her removal from Enthiran 2.0, reports Rediff.

She said she would protest at the shooting spot and in front of Rajinikanth's house till her demand is met.

Amy Jackson, who  became Peta India's brand ambassador last year, tweeted against Jallikattu on December 16. She urged actors and cricketers to sign a Peta India's petition against bullfights.

Jallikattu, a traditional bull taming sport, has been banned by the Supreme Court.

The protest against the ban is building up in southern Tamil Nadu districts as the sport is a major draw during next month's pongal celebrations.
With assembly elections also due next year, political parties have thrown their weight behind pro-Jallikattu agitators.

Central Railway has introduced a new seating arrangement on a Mumbai local train to create more seats for passengers.

The new longitudinal seats, the kind you see in metro trains, can accommodate 336 more commuters and became an instant hit.

Mumbai locals, which are choking under the load of the 75 lakh daily commuters, have become hazardous and are crying for drastic reform.

An interesting report in Mid Day suggests that bad design is part of the problem in Mumbai suburban rail network.

A 12-car local train, typically comes with four motor coaches, each powering two trailer coaches.

Quoting Railway officials, Mid Day said the size of transformers installed inside motor coaches can be shrunk to accommodate 650 more people.

The report has technical details of the plan and says the railway Board and Research, Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) in Lucknow have to work on the initiative.

Tamil Nadu journalist bodies have condemned actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth for spitting at reporters during an interaction on Sunday.

Vijayakanth’s party DMDK had organised a blood donation camp in Chennai and invited reporters  to cover it.

As Vijayakanth stepped forward to speak to the press, a reporter asked him  if Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK would come back to power in next assembly elections.

The actor-turned politician, calmly replied, "AIADMK will not capture power at all."

Then he inexplicably flew into a rage and asked,"Can you pose this question to Jayalalithaa? You will be afraid! Are you journalists," he allegedly said.

And he spat in anger into the mike.

Vijayakanth is known to exhibit eccentric behaviour on occasions. For instance, he had earlier turned a Yoga day session into a comedy show.

Several journalist bodies took offense and asked him to apologse for his repeated
"continuously" behaving in an "uncivilised" manner with them.

Rahul Gandhi also overlooked that among the issues, which kept him in news through the year, his mysterious foreign trips ranked right at the top.

In fact, his 2015 began with them and seems to be ending with the same.

In February, after a reported fight with his mother on the future of Congress, he took a leave of absence. He returned only in April letting the whole country speculate where on earth he had gone.

In September he was in the US, the same time Modi was visiting that country. Congress said Rahul Gandhi had gone to attend the Charlie Rose conference in Aspen in USA.

BJP had denied it saying the conference had already been held in June and July.

Kailash Surendranath, an ad filmmaker, became famous in 1988, after he produced the legendary Mile Sur Mera Tumhara song.

But he was destined to become more famous as the man, who gave Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, his first break.

In an interview with Indian Express, Kailash walks back to the moment where Salman Khan’s journey started.

Kailash was looking for actors for an advertisement of Campa Cola, which was to be shot underwater in Andaman islands.

Top models like Ayesha (Jackie Shroff’s wife) and his wife Arti had been shortlisted and they were looking for a male model.

Salman was a champion swimmer in his school and was being groomed as a national level swimming prospect. He used to practice at Hotel Sea Rock at Bandra regularly.

Arti saw Salman, who was just 15, diving at one end of the pool, swimming underwater and emerging out at the other end.

Impressed, Arti recommended Salman to Kailash, who agreed to meet him.

He was apprehensive that Salman was just a kid, till the wannabe model removed his shirt  to reveal a swimmer’s body with well-cut muscles.

He also met his first love Sangeeta Bijlani during a shoot; she was then a super model, who was paid five times Salman’s fee, Kailash tells Indian Express.

Salman recalled in 2013, during a chat with Koffee with Karan, how Kailash had helped him come out of depression when he was going through a breakup.

Kailash took him to a pond and told him that there were many fish in there. The message sunk.

Upset over the law and order situation in the state Bihar CM Nitish Kumar threw out 9 IPS officers from a meeting on Monday.

But on the same day, another engineer was found murdered in Vaishali district and a businessman was shot dead Muzaffarpur.

The two murders follow the killing of two engineers of a road construction company that had not paid up extortion money demanded by a gang operating in Darbhanga.

The Monday's 11 am meeting had been convened by the home department, which had invited all senor IPS officers of the state, to make a long-term vision plan for the state.

An angry Nitish Kumar walked in and asked DGP P K Thakur to join him for a private meeting.

After sometime a grim Thakur came out and asked 10 officers to leave the meeting.

The humiliated officers were baffled as the meeting had not been called to discuss law and order; but that was Nitish's way of sending a strong message about his unhappiness with the department.

The officers left the meeting but stayed in the building to be available if they were needed. There is no report on what transpired at the meeting.

The Telegraph gives a list of offices, who were evicted from the meeting:

DG level officers K.S. Dwivedi, A.K. Upadhyaya, and P.N. Rai

Additional Director Generals - Kumar Rajesh Chandra, Gupteshwar Pandey,

Inspector Generals - Pankaj Darad, Amit Kumar, A.K. Ambedkar, Ajitabh Kumar and Sunil Kumar.

"This was unimaginable and unprecedented," a senior police officer told the newspaper.

Nitish who prides himself in his professional conduct has been known to rebuke officers in public but never goes to the extent of throwing them out of meetings.

It is taken as extremely humiliating for a senior officer to be asked to leave a meeting.

Haryana Minister Anil Vij figured in a  controversy last month when he asked a young IPS officer Sangeeta Kalia to leave a meeting, only to be defied.

A day after Christmas, ISIS Number 1, Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi made a speech he was to regret.

Noting that the entire world was uniting against ISIS, Al-Baghdadi urged fellow Muslims to join his outfit and fight.

“The more intense the war against it, the purer it becomes,” he noted optimistically.

A Muslim political activist Iyad El-Baghdadi, not related to ISISleader, translated parts of the speech and posted it online.

This is how fellow Muslims reacted to the jihad call of ISISboss Al-Baghdadi.
