If you have the talent to bowl 140 mph consistently, you cannot hide it, even if you try.
Nathu Singh has just proved that. Screengrab BCCI TV
February 7, 2016, NewsCrunch

Nathu Singh, the son of a Jaipur factory worker, has been bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 3.2 crore.

Early in life, Nathu Singh's humble background did work against him. He was ignored by Jaipur district team, which could have been a  stepping stone and made his tough journey easier.

But if you have the talent to bowl 140 mph consistently, you cannot hide it, even if you try. Nathu Singh has just proved that.

The first major cricketer to spot his talent was Rahul Dravid. In September last year, he called up  Amrit Mathur, the man who was in-charge of Rajasthan cricket.  "This boy is special, look after him," was the message from The Wall, reported ESPN Cricinfo.

The second big endorsement came from Gautam Gambhir, who lost his wicket to Nathu Singh in the Ranji match. He told the Rajasthan coach Vijay Dahiya that he had seen India material after a long time.

"Please don't ruin him by over bowling," Gambhir said, according to ESPN Cricinfo, which ran a profile on Nathu Singh.

Sandeep Patil watched Nathu Singh play and picked him for Board President's XI against visiting South Africans though he had played only in three first class matches till then.

MRF pace academy's Senthilnathan and Glenn McGrath were equally impressed by him and sent the right tip offs to the right people. Another endorsement came from Venkatesh Prasad at National Cricket Academy, reports The Indian Express.

Many others lent a helping hand  to Nathu Singh - BCCI official Subash Joshi, senior players Deepak Chahar and Aniket Choudhury, and so on.

But none more critical than his father Bharat Ram, who on a salary of Rs 8,000, agreed to send him to cricket coaching that cost Rs 10,000 a year.

Till he was sold for Rs 3.2 crore at the 9th IPL auction to Mumbai Indians, the largest amount of money Nathu Singh had seen was Rs 12,000.

His family lived in a ramshackle house shown in the picture above. If you look closely you will notice that it does not even have a roof, just asbestos sheets.

With his new-found riches the first task Nathu Singh wants to undertake is to  build a house for his parents.

His father Bharat Singh, an unskilled worker at a small factory which makes electric wires, earns a monthly salary of Rs 8,000.

It was with that salary he had to support the cricketing ambitions of his son Nathu Singh, besides supporting his family.

The biggest challenge was in paying for Surana Cricket Academy, which charged an annual fee of Rs 10,000.

The Times of India reports that Bharat Singh had to borrow the money from a local lender who charged a monthly interest of two per cent. That is, he had to pay interest of Rs 2,000 on the borrowed amount every year, let alone paying the principal.

The coming year he knew that he may have to arrange for another Rs 10,000 to pay for continued coaching. But he still took a leap of faith in his son's abilities.

Anshu Jain of Surana, a former Ranji player himself, offered a huge discount realising the financial stress on the family.

But Nathu Singh still had to bear other expenses, sporting kit and shoes, to name some, which came second hand from helpful seniors.

The effort paid off on Saturday when said Mumbai Indians bought Nathu Singh after intense bidding.

Niti Central, the right-wing news and commentary site, which promised to be right and bold seems to have ended its operation.

If you go to the website Niti Central, you will find an announcement it has been retired since Jan 31, 2016.

The once high-profile news website seems to have declined rapidly in its last days.

It took almost a week for anyone to take note that it had perished.

Scroll did an article on Sunday saying Niti Central was dead. And it finally became a trending topic, to repeat, seven days, after it had put up the retirement notice.

The end seems to have come swiftly though not without confusion.

Its CEO Shashi Shekar tweeted on January 31 giving links to three latest articles on Niti Central. If he had any clue of the impending doom he showed no sign of it.

In his timeline since, he is yet to acknowledge or explain the end of Niti Central.

To add to the confusion, parts of the website continue to live. The sketchy news part of the website is still getting frequent updates. The off-stumped section, which deep links to articles on other news websites, continues.

The off-stump twitter account is active. The twitter feed of @NitiCentral also continues with a new user name - Off-stumped Report.

The main meat of the website, partisan opinions, seems to have ended.  A skeletal staff seems to be vested with the task of keeping the brand alive.

Niti Central was founded in 2012 by Internet entrepreneur Rajesh Jain, an ardent fan of PM Modi.

It was promoted as the "voice of the Neo-Middle Class in India" that would advocate Indian national interest. The site was initially run by Kanchan Gupta, a senior journalist from the Pioneer, another pro-BJP publication.

He left Niti Central to become the Editorial Director of NitiDigital.

The Vibgyor school campus at Whitefield, on the outskirts of Bangalore, had an unwelcome visitor on Sunday - a young leopard.

The desperate animal, which panicked after finding itself in a strange environment, was luckily spotted by an alert security guard at 4 am, who raised an alarm.

Double luckily it was a Sunday, a children-free day at the school.

A chilling CCTV footage shows the leopard roaming in the corridors of the school, which on a weekday would have been filled with children.

Though the forest department and wildlife experts started rescue operation early on Sunday, it took almost 14 hours to tranquilise the animal.

The animal also attacked a wild life expert, Sanjay Gubbi, and two TV cameramen, who got too close.

The attack on Gubbi was dramatically captured on camera.

As the forest department officials started sweeping the school to find the leopard, it darted from one of the rooms and attacked Gubbi near the swimming pool taking him by surprise.

He fought it off valiantly using his binoculars.

It also gave the forest officials time to find a good aim with their tranquilizer. The animal ran towards the rest room and collapsed.

The school is surrounded by shrinking green patches, which perhaps attracted the leopard.

The Whitefield area where the school is located was sparsely populated 30 years ago.

But it became one of the hubs of the IT revolution in Bangalore, which deprived  these animals of their habitat.

In their half-time show at Super Bowl, Cold Play stood out by using Hindi or Devanagari script to spell the band’s name on the instruments and amplifiers.

The instruments were further garlanded with flowers; the stage was also decked up with flowers and heavy temple bells, all designed to express an exotic Indian connection.

Though Cold Play performed three of their biggest hits – Viva La Vida, Paradise and recent single Adventure of a Lifetime, Beyoncee upstaged them and stole the show at Super Bowl.

Many in India, who saw the performance, wondered why Cold Play had written their name in the Devanagari script.

Some felt that Cold Play were showing their affection for the country and pointed out that
Christ Martin had been to Indiatwice recently. First, on a charity work and then to shoot the band’s seventh album, A Head Full of Dreams.

They also pointed out that he had performed impromptu at a Delhi pub last year.

But the real reason could do more with marketing than to flaunt any spiritual connection with India.

Cold Play are aware that their music has a tired and clichéd ring to it and want to break new grounds. Chris Martin had said last year that they were trying to make something colourful and uplifting with their new album A Head Full of Dreams.

A single from the album, Hymn for the Weekend, offered a colourful Indiato which many in the country took offense as promoting medieval exotica.

Following the release of A Head Full of Dreams, which has taken two years to produce, Cold Play will tour extensively for live shows this year, which is where they will make money.

One of the ways to sell their colourful and uplifting music is to put Devanagari on instruments.

For the record, Cold Play had used Devanagari earlier as well.  In a last September concert you can see photos of them with the Cold Play written in Hindi on instruments.

Film maker Ram Gopal Varma has released a titillating poster of his first erotic online movie Single X, issuing an open challenge to the censor board.

The poster, which shows the generous derrière of a skimpily clad unidentified actress, created an instant buzz.

The short film is being released under a new banner RGVtalkies, Varma’s new initiative to make online content.

Varma, who is struggling to deliver a hit in any language, said RGVtalkies would focus on erotic crime and horror movies.

He also dedicated the film to the Censor Board daring it to stop him.

If Varma thinks by going online, he can evade the Censor Board, he will find that its chief Pahlaj Nihalani is two steps ahead.

The Cinematograph Act, 1952, is silent on online content. But thanks to prodding from Nihalani the government may amend it to bring online content under its purview.

Nihalani had written to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in December complaining that Kya Kool hai Hum 3 was showing censored scenes in its online promos.

So, if Varma manages to shift to online media successfully, he may find Nihalani waiting for him there.

Unlike Jungle Book films of the past, which were more of song and dance affairs, the latest version promises to be an action-packed adventure.

That comes without a surprise as it has been directed by Jon Favreau, was the man behind Pirates of the Caribbean and Iron man.

The charmer of the movie is Neel Sethi, who probably fits the role better than his cartoon predecessor. Born in New York, Neel Sethi was selected in an audition that testd thousands of boys of his age.

He had made his debut in Diwali (2013) and his comfort before the camera and natural charm won him the role.

He is also the only human in the movie, with rest of the characters drawn and animated realistically.

There is an all-star cast giving life to the animal characters: Shere Khan (Idris Elba), Bagheera (Ben Kingsley), Baloo (Bill Murray) and Kaa (Scarlett Johansson)

India cricketer Virat Kohli, who has split from longtime girlfriend Anushka Sharma, posted a photo on his Instagram account last week with a caption - 'Heartbroken'.

He quickly deleted it, only to change his mind, and re-posted it again. The  'Heartbroken' caption was, however, missing and instead he wrote:

"Feels like I committed a crime deleting this picture. Haha sorry guys ????. Here it is again (sic)."

The photo shows him looking like a nerd in large glasses, a bit like a cartoon, as one of the comments noted.

It is not clear what Virat Kohli is trying to convey with his intriguing photo and captions.

A source close to Anushka Sharma told Mumbai Mirror that she was maintaining stoic silence while he was making a spectacle of himself.

In these reports, the unidentified sources are usually actors themselves anxious to plant a story in the media.

Sundar Pichai, the man from Chennai, who heads Google has received  a salary boost that makes him the highest paid executive in the US.

Here is what he has got in Indian rupees.

Google has given its CEO Sundar Pichai stock grant of $199m (Rs 1,350 crore).

The $199 million stock which is given to him at the grant price is worth $650 million (Rs 4,100 plus crore) in the market at the current share price.

This stock will vest over three years and if the current share price holds good and if Pichai  sells it he will be richer by Rs 4,100 plus crore.

The $199 million stock grant is on top of his annual salary, details of which have not been disclosed till now as he took up the job only last October.

In the coming months, Google would have to disclose the annual salary in the statutory filings.

So, why did Google give Pichai the new stock? It does that to its senior executives every two years to keep them motivated.

It also ensures stability at top, as Pichai is likely to stay for at least three years for the socks to vest.

It had given Pichai a stock grant of 50 million dollars in 2011 when Twitter was trying to hire him.

Friends say Kohli is really hurting inside; his antics are just a facade to put up a brave front.

February 10, 2016, NewsCrunch

If Virat Kohli is hurting inside after breaking up with Anushka Sharma, there is no real sign of it.

In fact,  the cricketer seems to celebrating the split from a girl friend, who was reportedly found to be too controlling. His old friends are welcoming the old Kohli back.

The couple split in November and the cricketer was back in form as early as December. At Rohit Sharma-Ritika Sajdeh wedding he scorched the dance floor with Sonakshi Sinha.

Mumbai Mirror spotted him at a party recently and reported him saying he was single and ready to mingle.

Then there was also the infamous heartbroken photo he posted last week, making light of he emotional trauma he was supposedly going through.

He also made it a point to unfollow Anushka on Twitter and Instagram, where he had often expressed his love for her.

Mirror quoted someone in the know saying the couple seem to have drifted apart. "They were spending little time together, with too much pressure on him to conform," the source said.

Anushka's decision to priorotise her career may also have contributed to the rift. A regular fixture at Indian matches she had gone missing in the last few outings.

There is another version of the breakup. People who know Kohli say he was very emotional about Anushka. A sensitive man, who is as intense off field as he is when playing, he had come to depend on Anushka for support.

They say Kohli is really hurting inside; his antics are just a facade to put up a brave front.

If Virat Kohli is hurting inside after breaking up with Anushka Sharma, there is no real sign of it. In fact, the cricketer seems to celebrating the split from a girl friend, who was reportedly found to be too controlling. His old friends are welcoming the old Kohli back. The couple split in November and the Kohli was back in form as early as December. At Rohit Sharma-Ritika Sajdeh wedding Kohli scorched the dance floor with Sonakshi Sinha.

Nasa has issued a statement saying that the Vellore blast that killed a college driver was not the result of a meteor activity.

Nasa scientists analysed photographs of the blast and said they were more consistent with “a land based explosion” than with something from space, reports The New York Times.

The statement also pointed out that meteorites were are often cool to touch when they land, The object recovered in India weighed only a few grams and appeared to be a fragment of a common earth rock, it added.

Kamraj, a driver of Bharatidasan Engineering College in Vellore, was killed on Saturday in an explosion, which the local officials said was caused by a falling meteor. The explosion also damaged the window panes of the college building.

On Sunday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had blamed Kamraj's death on the meteorite and announced compensation for his family.

However, Lindley Johnson, Nasa's planetary defence officer, told NYT that there had been no scientifically confirmed death by meteorite impact in human history so far.

She made the statement after the Vellore incident was reported.
