The UN celebrated BR Ambedkar's 125th birth anniversary for the first time in its history on Thursday. Punjab Assembly Speaker Charnjit Singh Atwal, who attended the function, said the world body heard should declare 14 April, the birthday of the crusader against discrimination, as "International Equality Day".

The UN celebrated BR Ambedkar's 125th birth anniversary for the first time in its history on Thursday.

Punjab Assembly Speaker Charnjit Singh Atwal, who attended  the function, said the world body heard should declare 14 April, the birthday of the crusader against discrimination, as "International Equality Day".

The keynote speaker, former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark and head of the UN Development Programme, said  Ambedkar's ideals were relevant today as the UN embarks on its ambitious programme of sustainable development goals (SDG).

The Ambdekar anniversary celebrations had been organised for the first time by the Indian Mission to the UN along with the Kalpana Saroj Foundation and the Foundation for Human Horizon.

More than 550 people — diplomats, academics, civil society activists and Indian residents from across the US — took part in the celebrations.

JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar made a memorable speech on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Ambedkar at Nagpur.

“We should shun Modi Bhakti and instead have Desh Bhakti. Modi is not the Country, RSS is not the Parliament and Manu Smruti is not the Constitution.”

A protester threw a chappal at Kanhaiya Kumar during the speech but missed his target.

Kanhaiya Kumar appealed to those hurling shoe saying they should throw a pair so that some poor person can benefit. He also suggested to bring an extra pair of chappals since it was very hot outside.

In his nearly 30 minute speech, Kanhaiya Kumar touched upon a range of issues from attacks on educational institutions by Modi government to its economic policy and to the sedition charges slapped on him.

Vajpayee government slashed rent for Priyanka Gandhi's bungalow to Rs 8000+ after she refused to pay hiked amount

Protection of their lives is the responsibility of the government of India and their palatial accommodation has been sanctioned as per the centre's policy.

As Priyanka had pointed out in a letter to the Vajpayee government, she is not staying at the bungalow by choice, but on SPG request, which occupies the larger part of he bungalow allotted to her.

Information based on an RTI, published by The Times of India,  reveals curious details about the governments attempts to fix a rent for these bungalows.

Priyanka was allotted a type VI government accommodation at 35, Lodhi Estate, on the recommendation of SPG in 1997, two years after her marriage at a rent of Rs 19,900 per month.

In 2002 the the Vajpayee government increased her rent to Rs 53,421, which she refused to pay saying it was beyond her capacity.

In 2003 the government acceded to her request. The Cabinet Committee on Accommodation decided in 2003 that security protectees may be charged a special licence fee for government accommodation well below the  the market rates.

The monthly rent dropped respectively to Rs 8,888,  Rs 10,715 and Rs 10,203 for Priyanka, Gill and Bitta.

The rent has since been revised periodically and at present, Priyanka pays Rs 31,300.

The heat wave gripping Telangana and Andhra Pradesh is so harsh, a woman in Karimnagar has cooked an omelette on ground. An ANI video shows the saree-clad woman breaking eggs and beating the yolk in a vessel in her backyard under the blazing sun. She then pours the mix on the floor, cooks an omelette and even flips after it is done.

The heat wave gripping Telangana and Andhra Pradesh is so harsh, a woman in Karimnagar has cooked an omelette on ground.

An ANI video shows the saree-clad woman breaking eggs and beating the yolk in a vessel in her backyard under the blazing sun. She then pours the mix on the floor, cooks an omelette and even flips  after it is done.

Well, she is not the first one to prove the saying - it is hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk.

Bill Nye an American science educator had shown a few years ago that the minimum temperature to cook an egg was 55 C. Many objects like floors made of stone heat up under the sun to touch that point in many parts of the world.

But at this relatively low temperature it may take up to 20 minutes for the egg to cook. An ANI video, which shows the woman cook, has no information on the time it took her to make the omelette.

The Met Office has issued a heat wave warning for Telangana and Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh saying the maximum temperature at most places is likely to be between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius.

The temperature in all 10 districts of Telangana was three to five degrees above what is normal for this time of the year.

It was directed and produced by Prakash Mehra, who struggled to find a suitable hero for the film. Salim-Javed were convinced about a newbie, Amitabh Bachchan, whose reputation for delivering flops scared Mehra.  .

In the book Written by Salim-Javed, Diptakirti Chaudhuri tells the  fascinating story of the hunt for the Zanjeer hero.

The role was first offered to Dharmendra, who agreed. But his brother Ajit, who was to co-produce the film, fell out with Mehra and Dharmendra backed off.

Dilip Kumar was the next choice. But he thought the role was one-dimensional as the hero would have to remain sullen through out the movie. There was no scope for performance, he felt and rejected.

Prakash Mehra then went to Dev Anand, overriding opposition from Salim-Javed, who thought he would be a serious misfit in the role. They were right and Dev Anand asked for a few romantic songs in the movie where he could indulge in his antics. He was off.

It was Raj Kumar next, who had already impressed in the role of an inspector. But he rejected.

The story goes that the eccentric actor did not like the smell of the hair oil Mehra was using and dreaded spending long hours with him. So, he put an impossible condition -- shoot the film in Madras – instead of saying no.

Salim-Javed were totally sold on Amitabh Bachchan as they thought only he could bring their Vijay alive. But Mehra would not change his mind.

By that time Pran had been selected for the Sher Khan’s role. His son shared a flat with Ajitabh Bachchan in Madras, who took him to watch an Amitabh film, From Bombay to Goa.

Impressed, Pran's son recommended Amitabh Bachchan to his father, who also joined Salim-Javed in putting pressure on Mehra, who finally gave in.

Amitabh Bachchan stepped in to play Inspector Vijay and new era in Bollywood begun.

The fancied RCB may have lost the home match against Delhi Daredevils on Sunday in Bangalore, but their fielders Shane Watson and David Wiese provided the showstopper moment of the match. Daredevils opener Shreyas Iyer stepped out for a big hit on the last ball of the first over. The ball almost cleared the ropes at long-on, till Shane Watson made a desperate lunge to grab it. Though he managed, his momentum, however, took him tantalisingly close to the boundary rope. Before he crossed over, Watson tossed the ball up.

How Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis lost 18 kgs in 3 months - five facts of his fitness regimen

It's not just Anant Ambani, even Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has lost significant weight in recent months - 18 kgs in three months, to be precise. His body weight has dropped from 122 kgs in December to the current 104 kgs and over the next few months he hopes to touch 88-90 kg. Fadnavis had modeled for a textile showroom in his younger days. He hopes to get his earlier fitness back.

How is the CM losing his weight? Mumbai Mirror outlines his fitness regimen which is showing remarkable results.

1) Behind every man's successful weight loss there is a woman. It was his wife Amruta's own weight loss programme which inspired him to lose his portly stature.

2) Fadnavis consulted the best doctors in the field. Holistic health guru Mickey Mehta  and Jayashree Todkar, a metabolic and bariatric surgeon, are mentioned in the report.

3) Among other things, he seemed to have had problems with metabolism and has been prescribed medicines to improve it.

3) As a chief minister Fadnavis leads an active life walking up to 10,000 steps a day. But he gets less than five hours of sleep a day. So, he has been taught breathing exercises to manage sleep deprivation.

Fadnavis is also undergoing agility-and-strength training and sport stretches; but given his schedule, he is able to spend about two hours a week on them.

4) He has been recommended three healthy meals a day with a a balance of proteins and fats, minimised carbohydrates and fibre.

His diet revolves around a cup of tea a day, a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes for proteins, .bhakri, chapati or wholewheat bread for carbohydrates, green vegetables and low-glycemic fruits for fibre

So, what's the takeaway in what Fadnavis's fitness regimen. You are never too busy to ignore your health and there is always time to get fit.

There is immense social media buzz on the Islamic dress code, foreign minister Sushma Swaraj, followed during her visit to Iran. She met senior Iranian leaders on Sunday and held discussions on several of strategic and economic issues, from Chabahar port to oil imports. In her meeting with President Hassan Rouhani, Sushma had used a shawl to cover her head and even hands. The shawl, which was of the same colour as her light magenta saree, gave an impression that she had gone there wearing a hijab.

There is immense social media buzz on the Islamic dress code, foreign minister Sushma Swaraj, followed during her visit to Iran.

She met senior Iranian leaders on  Sunday and held discussions on several of strategic and economic issues, from Chabahar port to oil imports.

In her meeting with President Hassan Rouhani, Sushma had used a shawl to cover her head and even hands. The shawl, which was of the same colour as her light magenta saree, gave an impression that she had gone there wearing a hijab.

She was a little more relaxed in her meeting with her Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, where she just wore a Benazir Bhutto-type head cover.

Iran mandates Islamic dress-code for men and women though the rules are not enforced as strictly s in Saudi Arabia especially for tourists and foreigners.


But in her dressing up, by deviating  from her regular attire, Sushma showed remarkable cultural sensitivity.

Over the years, Sushma has followed her own strict personal dress code, a sari-sindoor-bindi-mangalsutra combination that reflects her party’s idea of an adarsh sanskari Bhartiya nari.

On formal occasions she is also seen sporting a sadri – half-sleeved ethnic jackets – over her saree.

Rajasthan bride rides horse to lead baraat to her groom’s house turning tradition upside down (video)

Savita, a bride in Sikar, Rajasthan, mounted a horse and led the baraat procession to her groom’s house turning a tradition upside down. A video from Daink Bhaskar shows a regular wedding procession with lights and dancing relatives with the exception that it is the bride not the groom on the horse. Savita is also dressed like a groom in male attire – kurta, pyjama and turban.
It was Savita’s father Kailash Kumawat’s idea to take her on baraat instead of receiving the groom as it is done usually. (video below)

It is not clear what prompted Kailash to initiate the unusual ceremony.

Three years ago, a bride in Madhya Pradesh, Rajni, had similarly rode baraat to the groom's house.

Her Patidar community had a unique tradition — 'Kanya Ghatari'—, wherein the bride took her baraat to the groom's place. Though the tradition had waned, Rajni sought to revive it and send a message for the empowerment of women.

Video: Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar’s stunning Produnova vault – she got Bronze in 2014 Commonwealth

Dipa Karmakar created history on Monday by becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics. The 22-year-old girls from Agartala, Tripura, scored 52.698 points in the Olympics qualifying event to book a berth for artistic gymnastics in Rio Games to be held here in August.

Dipa Karmakar created history on Monday by becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics.

The 22-year-old girl from Agartala, Tripura, scored 52.698 points in the Olympics qualifying event to book a berth for artistic gymnastics in Rio Games to be held here in August.


Born in 1993, Dipa Karmakar came to spotlight when she won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, held at Glasgow.

She was the first Indian female gymnast to do so in the history of the games and also one of the five women who have successfully performed the very difficult Produnova vault in competition, She holds the highest score (15.100 ) in the elite group.

The Produnova vault, consisting of a front handspring and two front somersaults, is one of the most difficult feats to perform.

John Abraham refused to comment on former girlfriend Bipasha Basu's imminent marriage with Karan Singh Grover on Monday, opting to shove away the mike of a reporter, who asked for his response.

He was spotted by reporters at a promo in Mumbai. John Abraham was visibly uncomfortable and sweating in Mumbai's sweltering weather.

Though he posed for the cameras and took a few questions, he grew angry when a reporter asked for his comments on Bipasha Basu's's marriage.

He took the pretext of greeting an acquaintance to get away but not before  pushing away the camera.

In new twist to Pratyusha Banerjee case, report states she had undergone abortion few days before her suicide

The last days of TV star Pratyusha Banerjee were more traumatic than thought till now as a report states that she had been pregnant and undergone an abortion a few days before she hanged herself. The popular Balika Vadu star had hanged herself on April 2 at her Mumbai flat. Quoting JJ Hospital doctors The Times of India reports that there was evidence of a premature death of the foetal cell in her utetrus, which is an indication of medical termination of pregnancy.
Thepregnancy report adds a twist to the case as Pratyusha's boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh's
bail hearing is scheduled to come up soon.

The last days of TV star Pratyusha Banerjee were more traumatic than thought till now as a report states that she had been pregnant and undergone an abortion a few days before she hanged herself.

The popular Balika Vadu star had hanged herself on April 2 at her Mumbai flat.

Quoting JJ Hospital doctors The Times of India reports that there was evidence of a premature death of the foetal cell in her utetrus, which is an indication of medical termination of pregnancy.

The doctors said the pregnancy and the following abortion may have occurred in the month that preceded her suicide.

The newspaper also cited expert opinion saying it would be tough to establish the paternity of the child as the tissues that could supported a DNA test had been removed.

The report adds a twist to the case as Pratyusha's boyfriend and live-in partner Rahul Raj Singh's bail hearing is scheduled to come up soon.

Mumbai police have booked Rahul Raj Singh  under sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 504 and 506 (criminal intimidation) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) in connection with Pratyusha's death following an FIR lodged by her parents — Soma and Shankar Banerjee.

A Mumbai sessions court rejected Rahul’s petition for anticipatory bail on 7 April. But on 12 April, the Mumbai High Court had granted him interim relief asking the police not to arrest him for at least a week.

In his anticipatory bail application, Rahul had claimed that Pratyusha's parents had been influenced by certain people to file the FIR against him. He also pointed out that Pratyusha had not left behind any suicide note and also that there had been no marks on her body, other than the ligature wound.

The ‘relief’ granted by the HC to Rahul ended on Monday and his bail plea may soon come up for a hearing.

To add to their embarrassment, a reporter asked Shahid about the rumour on he and his wife Mira Rajput expecting their first child.

Shahid came clean and said he was indeed becoming a father. 

As you can see in the video below, Kareena was not enjoying this conversation at all. Far from congratulating the expectant father, she as seen fidgeting, straightening her hair, blushing and looking nervous  - all at the same time.

Out of form South African fast bowler Dale Steyn may be warming the bench for Gujarat Lions, but that did not stop him from claiming a wicket on the streets of Mumbai. The pacer seems to have wandered off from his hotel and spotted a bunch of kids playing tennis ball cricket at a local ground. He joined them for a game and claims he managed to get a wicket. .

The pacer seems to have wandered off from his hotel and spotted a bunch of kids playing tennis ball cricket at a local ground. He joined them for a game and claims he managed to get a wicket. .

A video posted by Steyn shows him bowling from a short run up,and getting a kid out effortlessly. As the bowler celebrates, a  kid is heard encouraging him, saying good bowling.  

A year ago Steyn had similarly played football on the streets of Bangladesh, Neither security concerns nor pouring rain had stopped him then.

A video of a little girl being married off in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, will break your heart. It is night, well past the six-year-old girl’s bed time. But she is in a bridal attire and made to walk around the fire, along with the groom, also a minor. She is irritated, possibly scared and can be heard crying. A grown up man persuasively ensures she completes saptapadi, the seven rounds around the fire.

Police responded in kind swinging lathis, firing teargas. About a dozen policemen were injured  and a few of their vehicles were torched.

Different parts of the city Bannerghatta, Jalahalli cross, ElectronicsCity, Penya were tense and came to a standstill due to massive traffic jams.

The famed software industry was hit as techies were seen stranded especially in the ElectronicsCity area.

RTI applications seeking details about his BA and MA degrees have allegedly hit a stonewall at PMO.

In an old interview with Zee TV, Modi dwells on his educational qualification. He says he had formal education till high school, which got interrupted as he left home.

But he went on to get BA and MA degrees through external exams and even topped the university, says Modi.

The interview was conducted before he became the Gujaratchief minister.

The journalist, who interviews him, is Rajeev Shukla, who in his journalism days used to host a chat show on Zee TV called Ru Ba Ru.

Modi went on to become the prime minister and Shukla, a Congress minister and a BCCI heavyweight.

Bahubali actress Tamannaah Bhatia issued a statement on Tuesday denying that she would quit films and get married. She emphatically stated that it was false news and that she would let the world know the day she got someone in her life. “I am currently busy shooting for Prabhudeva’s next and few south films,” Tamannaah said in a statement.

SpotBoye reported that information first which was picked by DNA. On Monday, Tamannaah re-tweeted the DNAstory from her official account, which was as good as endorsing it.

On Tuesday, she denied it through a statement.

In the meanwhile, confusion persists if she is signing new films or has stopped. A few reports said she had signed Rohit Shetty‘s next film with Ranveer Singh and that would be one of her last movies. Some others said she was also considering a few South movies.

Chris Gayle has taken a  break from RCB to fly to West Indies to be with his girlfriend Natasha Berridge and their new-born son.

The couple have been together for over 10 years now.  A well-known name in her own right in St Kitts, Natasha Berridge is not your typical WAG.

She has a life of her own and does not shadow Chris Gayle around the world, but is around whenever he needs her. When he underwent surgery for back pain last August, she was there to help get him back on his feet.

Natasha Berridge is a fashionista, with an interest in designing, though it is not clear if she does it as a profession. She is active in culture and over the last year been closely promoting Ultra Carnival, her country's flagship event.  

She comes from a family with connected with sports - her brother Richard Berridge is the COO of Patriots, a Carribean Premier League team.

Chris Gayle likes to project an image of a party-hopper, who enjoys his life and women. Sex is a recurrent theme in his social media posts and sometime ago he had posted a photo of a stripper pole in his bedroom.

He also got into trouble in January this year trying to flirt with an Australian reporter on live TV.

Despite all the bravado, Chris Gayle seems to be a loyal partner to Natasha Berridge.
