Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff joined the intolerance debate in style  on Tuesday with a comment that is reverberating through social media.

A video released by Times Now shows Jackie Shroff looking slightly tipsy and suggesting that Aamir Khan had a right to voice his opinion.

Jackie Shroff is in Goa attending the IFFI.

He said, “If some people object to something it’s their wish. I feel everyone should be able to express bindaas(carefree).”

Jackie Shroff said this with a delicious touch of bindaas. His comment points at what has gone wrong with the debate on intolerance.

It has become too taut and bitter, with the warring sides playing a zero sum game. Pull back a little, listen to the other side, without getting too offended.

Be Bindaas, not bitter, this is what Jackie Shroff is saying.

Bangalore’s elite Mount CarmelCollegegirls gave Congress leader Rahul Gandhi a face-palm moment on Tuesday when they disagreed with many of his arguments.

A video of the event shows Rahul Gandhi asking an auditorium full of noisy girls if Swachch Bharath worked.

Yes, came the resounding answer.

Visibly baffled, Rahul Gandhi argued with some justification that the noise had both Yes and No voices.

His next question – was Make in Indiaworking? Again a split noisy answer, but more leaning towards the Yes.

As the video shows Rahul Gandhi was not prepared for the audience to disagree with him. He went red in the face but spiritedly managed to salvage the situation.

Rahul Gandhi has been interacting with students from colleges across the country. These events are usually held closed doors, keeping the media out.

Congress seems to have allowed a video recording of the Mount Carmel interaction, a decision that may come for reconsideration in future.

A man standing behind a woman tries to get a feel of her from behind.

She lifts her left hand and pulls it back with remarkable aim hitting where it hurts.

The short film titled That Day After Everyday runs for half a minute, but is very well shot and enacted.  But does it send a wrong message?

Aren’t girls in these situations better off drawing public attention to the molester than launching an assault themselves? Opinion could be divided on this.

The Modi government has reportedly decided to get rid of Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani for the fiasco over the Modi propaganda video.

The tacky video tried to pass off International  accomplishments such as International Space Station as contributions of Make in India, drawing widespread ridicule.

Mumbai daily Mid Day reported on Thursday that I&B Ministry had decided to oust Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani after his video embarrassed the government.

Quoting an unnamed ministry official, Mid Day said an official announcement would be made soon.

The daily also said Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley and his deputy Rajyavardhan Rathore, had conveyed their displeasure to Nihalani.

If the report is confirmed, the Ministers may have given a chance to Nihalani to step down gracefully. It is unlikely that the I & B Ministry would have acted without Modi’s approval, given that  Nihalani was reportedly an RSS candidate.

In a recent interview Nihalani had sought to defend his actions including the propaganda video. He said though the  video  had not been produced with Modi’s approval, he had sent a copy to his office. Modi was yet to respond, he had noted.

After the propaganda video fiasco, Nihalani triggered a new controversy  by editing kissing scenes in Spectre triggering a tsunami of ridicule on social media.

These were just two of latest gaffes of Nihalani, who took over as Censor Board chief, in January this year.  For the image conscious Modi government the lapses may have proved to be intolerable.

The Lok Sabha had been convened to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of B R Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution.

The occasion also became battlefield for the government and opposition to clash on intolerance.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said Ambedkar had never thought of putting the term secularism in the Preamble. He also defended  Modi Government’s track record in initiating developmental programmes for various sections.

As he spoke, the cameras caught Modi with his eyes shut deeply.

Ironically, November 26 has been designated as Constitution Day on the initiative of Modi.  But given his whirlwind foreign trips his body was perhaps struggling to get used to the Indian time zone.

Every September 2 Ravi Pillai flies to Tirupati Tirumala temple to perform udayasthamana pooja  YouTube screen grab

November 26, 2015, NewsCrunch

Kerala tycoon Ravi Pillai is in news over the big fat Indian wedding of his daughter Dr Aarathi at Kollam, which has reportedly cost him Rs 55 crore.

With a net worth of $ 3 billion, Ravi Pillai, the head of the Gulf-based RP Group of Companies, can afford it.

A farmer’s son, a first generation entrepreneur, he built his fortune over the decades.

He says besides hard work, it is his faith, which saw him succeeding.

Every September 2, on his birthday, he flies to Tirupati Tirumala temple and performs the udayasthamana pooja.

Devotees, who perform this pooja, are allowed to stay in sanctum sanctorum from dawn to dusk, praying.

At any given time only five to six people are reportedly allowed to perform udayasthamana, so there is a 10 year waiting period to perform it.

A long-term planner, Ravi Pillai, books his annual date with Lord Venkateshwara, thirty years ahead, reports Forbes India.

Aamir Khan's comments on intolerance made bhakts so furious they started a campaign to boycott e-commerce site Snapdeal, which has signed up the Bollywood actor as its brand ambassador.

The boycott, which was on an overdrive for 2 or 3 days, took three forms - a vow not to buy on Snapeal, uninstall its app and downgrade it by giving it a one-star rating.

So, how did the bhakt power damage Snapdeal?

The New  Indian Express filed a report on 25 November, claiming that 85,000 people had uninstalled Snapdeal apps, nearly 10% of its total installed base.

The report attributed the information to unidentified sources in the company and had no other detail, to offer.

Without data on how many had installed Snapdeal app before the controversy started, it is not possible to take the report as authoritative.

This data also does not sit well with the numbers on the downgrading of Snapdeal app, which can firmly verified.

Bhakts started a campaign to give the lowest one-star rating to Snapdeal app and the impact seems to be minimal going by two sets of numbers:

One, Snapdeal app has a rating of 4.1 even after the controversy. This is in line with the ratings of its competing apps, Flipkart (4.2) and Amazon (4.1).

Second, 8,82,243 people have installed Snapdeal app and 7% of them have given it a rating of 1,

There is nothing unusual in this. 8% of Amazon users and 6% of Flipkart users have similarly given it the same rating.

Flipkart and Amazon  apps have 1,577,821 and  428,000 users respectively.

Now, on the final threat of Bhakt community to not buy from Snapdeal. E-commerce is a commodity game driven by capital, technology and implementation.

What this means is - a few percentages of higher  discount, people will flock to Snapdeal, including Bhakts.

Snapdeal app has a rating of 4.1 even after the controversy. This is in line with the ratings of its competing apps, Flipkart (4.2) and Amazon (4.1).

You Aryans have come from outside - Mallikarjun Kharge's (video below)

November 27, 2015, NewsCrunch

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge's intervention took a dramatic turn on Thursday after he leapt on topics usually not touched upon in Parliament.

Kharge rose to respond to Home Minister Rajnath Singh's speech on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar.

Rajnath Singh had complained that Indira Gandhi  had added the words secular and socialist to the preamble much later, signifying that BJP was not comfortable with that.

Kharge took exception to these remarks and said Dr Ambedkar wanted to add these words to the constitution but could not do so in to the prevailing atmosphere.

The response from BJP benches was noisy and in the din somebody must have said that Dr Ambedkar also wanted to leave the country.

It was this comment, not audible in  the video, which got Kharge wild.

Referring to Dr Ambedkar's and his own Dalit origin, Kharge asserted, they were the original inhabitants of the country. "You Aryans, came much later," he pointed out. He said the original inhabitants were there not to quit the country, but to protect it.

In colourful language, he said the original inhabitants had suffered 5,000 years of oppression and warned there would be  a bloodbath if anyone tries to change the constitution.

The video clip from Mango news unfortunately cuts out the last segment of Kharge's statement.

November 27, 2015, NewsCrunch

PM Modi tried to make a conciliatory speech in the Parliament on Friday.

Modi addressed the wrap up session of the Parliament that had been convened to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar.

He paid tribute to Nehru though in a roundabout way and reaffirmed his party's faith to constitution as it stands.

It was an important speech Congress was looking forward to know if he would address the concerns it had raised. Speaking on Thursday, Mallikarjun Kharge had warned of bloodbath if anyone meddled with the  Constitution.

Modi's reaching out  did nothing  to relax Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Kharge, who sat with grim faces listening to his words carefully.

It also failed to bring any seriousness to Rahul Gndhi and his three close buddies - Jyotiraditya Scindia, K C Venugopal and Deepender Hooda.

As the camera zoomed in on the Congress benches it caught Gang Rahul cracking a joke. Scindia may have said something funny, which seems to have drawn a response from Hooda who had to cross over Venu to whisper to Rahul, who seemed to enjoy it thoroughly.

The other Congress MPs looked so grave it looked that they had come to attend a funereal meeting.

Haryana's young IPS officer Sangeeta Kalia showed her mettle on Friday by staying firm during a confrontation with Health Minister Anil Vij.

The Minister, who was upset with the Fatehabad SP asked her to leave the meeting after a heated argument. When she refused, he himself left the room.

The five-time MLA Anil Vij has a clean but a controversial record. He accused Sangeeta of taking a casual approach to curb liquor smuggling at the Punjab border.  She said she had registered 2,500 cases but could not do much as arrested criminals secured bail and went back to smuggling, reports IANS.

That is when Anil Vij lost his temper.

Sangeeta, is a well-known officer in Haryana and is often cited as an inspiration story.

She is a daughter of a painter, who worked for the police department. Her father had worked in Fatehabad district painting the very building she presides over now, reports The Tribune.

She joined the service the year her father retired, 2010.

She started writing UPSC exam in 2005 and got into railways in her second attempt, which she did not join. She wrote again and successfully got into the police.

By becoming a police officer, she not only fulfilled her father's dream but also her own.

When she was teen she was an avid watcher of Udhaan and was inspired by actress Kavita  Chaudhary who played an IPS officer in the TV soap.
