Noted Kannada film director Girish Kasaravalli has announced his decision to stay away from Bengaluru Literature festival.

Speaking to a Kannada daily, Kannada Prabha, he said he had told the organisers that he would not attend the event, when they had approached him. But they still went  ahead and added his name in the list of participants, he claimed.

Malayalam writers Satchidanand,  Sara Joseph, her daughter Sangeetha Sreenivasan, Kannada writers Arif Raja, T.K. Dayanand, O L Nagabhushana Swamy have announced that they will boycott  Bengaluru Literature festival  that will be held December 5-6.

They have taken objection to the event organiser Vikram Sampath's opposition  to the writers returning Sahitya Academi awards. They also say they are not comfortable with his right-wing leanings.

Vikram Sampath, author of books on Mysore royalty and singer Gauhar Jaan, was among the signatories to a letter against the return of awards.

Dayanand, told The Telegraph: "I am for returning awards to protest injustices in society. He (Sampath) isn't. So it wouldn't be ideal for me to participate in this event," he said.

However, another section of writers who had returned awards such as Shashi Deshpande or supported them, have decided to take part in Bengaluru Literature festival. Some of them disagreed with the boycotting writers and said the event offered an opportunity to debate irrespective of the ideologies of the organisers.

A section of Kannada writes have been unhappy with Bengaluru Literature festival for giving a token presence to the State language. O L Nagabhushana Swamy said he was boycotting as the event was not giving Kannada prominence when compared  to English and Hindi.

Modi may avoid the media and they may also torment him. But when they  meet him in person, they can't help but mob him.

Modi was mobbed again by selfie-seeking journalists on Saturday during a Diwali Milan lunch hosted the Prime Minister and BJP chief Amit Shah at party headquarters.

Modi spoke briefly on non-discrimination and equality, and went around freely shaking hands, only to get mobbed.

During the last year's Diwali Milan also he had been similarly surrounded by journalists, who had pulled their mobile cameras out.

A few members of the media fraternity slammed journalists for acting like starstruck fans when they met Modi. Others defended them saying that is what happens when you meet him so rarely.

Kerala Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson called upon Kerala Church to spread Christianity in India recently.

Addressing a seminary of Malankara Orthodox Church in Kottayam recently, the Chief Secretary said that the church should introspect its mission step up on evangelism.

He asserted that true meaning of gospel was Go Spell - that is to spread the word of Christ.

He identified three ways to spread the biblical doctrine - mass evangelism, personal evangelism and church evangelism, that is churning out the right kind of missionaries.

A 16 minute video of the event  released by Malankanara Orthodox Church shows him making the speech in the presence of Kerala Governor Sathasivam.

He starts his speech saying in English that he would speak not as Chief Secretary of Kerala but as the son of Malankara Orthodox Church.

Jiji Thompson, a 1980 batch officer, took over as the Chief Secretary early this year despite some opposition as his name figures in the palmolive oil controversy.

The religious minded IAS officer  also gets frequently invited to functions held at Hindu temples.

Foreign journalists are usually content doing followup stories, working their contacts, which are easy to come by given their exalted status.

They do not usually take on the host government on the administrative issues that affect their work.

The Washington Post's India bureau chief  Annie Gowen broke this norm on Friday by tweeting that fancy PR agencies had been trying to contact her. She also made a comment that suggested that the government  should not be spending money on them.

Her tweet created a splash with many reading it as evidence of Modi government wasting money to get publicity.

Annie Gowen posted a followup tweet on Saturday clarifying her statement further, hinting at the source of her frustration, and indeed, of many other journalists in Delhi.

After Modi took over, one of the first moves made by his government was to place an informal ban on sharing of information by officers and ministers. There was never an official order, but the word was out and sources dried up overnight.

A fear psychosis developed among officers as rumours of government snooping on movements and communication of key personnel started buzzing.

From officers to clerks, and from gossips to documents, everything started getting held back leaving journalists in the lurch.

This is perhaps what Annie Gowen means when she asks Modi government to make its officers available instead of spending money on PR.

The widely quoted piece of data has been attributed to professor Gregory Lazos of the Panteion University, Athens, who has documented 18,500 sex workers in Greece and studied them.

Some women just do it for a cheese pie, or a sandwich they need to eat because they are hungry,' he told The Times.

The number of Greek women in the sex industry is also on rise and according to Prof Lazos today they account for 80% of the sex workers in the country.

Before the crisis started mostly Eastern European women were working as prostitutes in Greece.

A €600 million business. sex work is legal in Greece.

Burdened with an unproductive government and public sector which employs most citizens at exorbitant wages and in unproductive jobs, Greece is in economic doldrums.

The country is steeply divided in pushing the reforms  that are required to pull it out as most politicians and citizens are  it ready for the pain.

The protest against poor infrastructure at Whitefield, the oldest IT hub of Bangalore. drew about 8,000 techies on Monday.

Whitefield, always a commuter's nightmare, has taken a turn for the worse. The recent rains have washed off poorly laid roads exposing both corruption and pot holes, irking techies.

We pay taxes, so give us good roads - that is the essence of the Techie argument here.

Techies, in Bangalore and elsewhere, are so inward-looking they come out only when their lives are affected.

The unsegregated garbage they generate gets dumped in landfills at nearby villages where they pollute land, air and water,  destroy farming and health.

There has not been one murmur on the issue, not one group from techies has made any attempt to address it.

Of course, the government is ultimately responsible for public service delivery. But it works better when there is public pressure.

When the affluent groups worry only about themselves, ignoring more pressing issues, the hypocrisy in the situation becomes startling.

A video posted on Sunday gives a sample of the garbage problem in the city. But people like the person, who narrates in the video, will be happy if this garbage is shifted out of his locality.

Voices like his will carry more impact if they also strive for an effective  solution.

If you type www.SlapAamir.com, you now get redirected to www.KissAamir.com now? So, what brought about the change.

The students say it was never their intention to spread hatred against Aamir Khan by encouraging people to slap him. They just wanted to "mock the ongoing controversy" over Aamir's statement.

They decided to create the www.SlapAamir.com after Shiv Sena offered a lakh of rupees to anyone who could slap Aamir Khan. The Bollywood actor had caused outrage in right-wing circles with his comments on intolerance.

But instead of spreading humour they found that www.SlapAamir.com was spreading hatred.

Bhakts took it as a chance to deliver endless slaps and www.SlapAamir.com recorded over 8 million slaps in 15 hours before it was taken down.

“While many understood, others who were not able to see the subtle humour and message in the campaign, just enjoyed virtually slapping 'Aamir',” Himanshu told The Week.

So, they quickly moved to on to launch the phase 2 of their project and launched  www.KissAamir.com

Now, bhakts who type www.SlapAamir.com to slap Aamir, land at www.KissAamir.com that invites them to kiss him.
Himanshu and Dhvani are happy to note that www.KissAamir.com also is receiving a good response clocking hundreds of kisses per minute.

Samanya Kannadiga, a Bangalore-based activist group, has started  a campaign to force e-commerce giant Flipkart provide support to Kannada-speaking customers in their own language.

Kannadigas are upset that despite being headquartered in Bangalore, Flipkart provides support only in Hindi and English. If you call the toll free customer support number 1800 208 9898, you get a welcome message in Hindi and are then asked to choose between Hindi or English to carry on.

Kannada groups are also upset that Flipkart billboards and other marketing activities are carried out entirely in English or Hindi.

Samanya Kannadiga released a video on Monday, which shows a Kannada customer insisting on speaking in his language. The man is polite but firm. The Flipkart customer agent tries Hindi, English and then switches on to a lengthy monologue in Malayalam before cutting the call.

Industry leaders such as Subroto Bagchi   acknowledge that the generosity of Kannadigas in accepting migrants with a big heart played a key role in the success of the software industry in Bengaluru.

Kannada groups feel offended when companies, which operate in their state, fail to give due recognition to their language and culture.

Samanya Kannadiga has also launched two Twitter hashtags  #NokannadaNobusiness and #SayNoToFlipkart to mobilise support against Flipkart, which is yet to take the campaign seriously, and has just sent a standard response.

A new video taken during Modi's visit  to Paris for climate change talks is buzzing.

The video shows Modi buried in the last row of world leaders, who are standing for a group photo. As Obama enters the frame, many leaders greet him, including Modi.

Though Modi can be barely seen, he does his best to draw Obama's attention by peeping out and waving hands.

The video adds music and dialogue to enhance Modi's discomfort and take a dig at his zeal to greet an old friend.

The incident seems to have occurred at the culmination of the talks when the French president Hollande assembled all leaders for a ‘Paris 2015 family photo’.

The event was attended by nearly 150 world leaders including Barack Obama and Xi Jinping.
