Freedom of expression was in danger, but only for Pravin Togadias and Yogi Adityanaths, says Umar Khalid (Video below) |
Arrested JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya returned to campus on Friday to a heroes welcome. The duo, who have been accused of sedition, were released from Tihar jail, after a sessions court gave them bail.
Umar spoke to a large gathering of cheering supporters and said he was proud that they had been booked under provisions that had been used against freedom fighters.
He also dismissed that freedom of expression was in danger. But pointed out that only the likes of Pravin Togadia and Yogi Adityanath could enjoy it.
Umar said that he was being labelled a terrorist because of Islam. Though he was not religious, that showed how Muslims were being targeted.
Umar shared an anecdote to loud cheers.
Missing, a 1982 movie by Costa-Gavras, depicts the oppression which follows Pinochet's coup in Chile. An American goes looking for his missing son, who he says had done nothing wrong.
You don't have to do anything to be put in jail in Chile, he is told.
That, Umar says, is where India stands today.
