A college official told The Times of India that the principal acted after a students' organization and local people demanded action against the girls.
A report in The Hindu identified the students' organization as ABVP and said it had even given a representation to the police.
The principal told The Hindu that he had taken disciplinary action as the girls were students of the college though the alleged photos had been taken outside the campus.
The
Assistant commissioner of Puttur Basavaraju, who is also the trust president, told TOI he would visit the college to seek a report.

The WhatsApp-suspension incident follows a similar case of moral policing that occurred at a Suratkal college early this year.
The college suspended a boy and five girl students after a Facebook photo of theirs went viral. The photo, which showed the boy lying on the lap of the girls in their classroom, "created emotional outbursts" amongst the student community, the college said.
The boy was later thrashed by unknown persons and had to be hospitalised.
