A Sikh boy from Texas Armaan Singh Sarai, 12, was arrested and put in a juvenile detention centre for three days on the charge of joking about carrying a bomb.

Dallas police were unaware or disregarded that fact that Armaan was born with a heart condition that has made him go through three open heart surgeries.

A Facebook post by his cousin Ginee Haer gives a different version of the incident and says  a class bully made a false complaint that Armaan had a bomb hidden in his school bag. And teachers called the police.

The Facebook post by his cousin went viral and has been shared 7,000 times. It also alerted the local and international media on the incident.

Ginee Haer says on December 11th, 2015, after the false accusation was made the principal, without any questioning, interrogation, or notification to his parents, called the police.

It also alleges that the police did not inform the family that they had taken Armaan to custody. Worried that he had not returned home, his family called every police department in the area, only to find out he was sent to a Juvenile facility.

Armaan was released on December 15th.

The police allege that Armaan had admitted to saying in jest that he had a bomb and that he would blow up the school.

The police checked his backpack and concluded that he did not pose any security threat. But thy still arrested him, as making a “terroristic threat” is a felony.

Armaan's detention follows another Texas incident in which police had handcuffed a Muslim teen Ahmed Mohamed, who had brought a digital clock to school.

About 150 people locked up the school to oppose the district administration’s  decision to reinstate Sunita Kuwar as cook, reports The Telegraph.

Sunita, who has been a widow for 15 years, had worked in the school as a cook for five years. But in January 2014 she was fired as a few villagers objected saying “her character was not good.”

She petitioned the local administration and managed to get her job back after nearly two years, which led to the Wednesday’s protest.

In a blunt rebuttal, Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor has said Katrina Kaif never called him papa.

“Rubbish, she wouldn’t dare to take such liberties with me,” he told Khalid Mohammed in an interview for The Quint.

A newspaper had reported that Katrina had begun to call him Papa, indicating that she and Ranbir Kapoor were planning to settle down.

Ranbir Kapoor had also refuted the report saying Katrina called his father Rishi Ji not Papa.

In the same interview Rishi described Katrina as well behaved, pretty and hardworking. He would not go beyond that.

Katrina and Ranbir Kapoor have been dating since 2010 and moved in together last November.

Over the last two years there have been persistent reports that the two have been planning to get married.

It is a little odd that despite the long association Katrina has not moved beyond calling her boyfriend’s father Rishi Ji. A case of strong parental disapproval?

Zomato food porn campaign raised eyebrows

Zomato has pulled out its controversial double-meaning advertisements from porn websites.

Its CEO Deepinder Goyal has also apologised to anyone offended by them.

Zomato started advertising on porn websites for late night food delivery between 11 pm and 4 am. It also claimed that the campaign was cost effective and getting good response.

The ads caught attention as they were racy and loaded with double meaning. For instance, an image showed a doughnut and asked viewers to nibble around delicious holes.

Another showed a hotdog and asked viewers to swallow the whole six inches.

The campaign raised eyebrows and the backlash, if any, was muted. But it was enough for the company to pull down the controversial advertisements.

Writing in his blog, Goyal claimed the campaign had broken new ground but offended some people who felt it was in poor taste.

“Some also said that all porn is not legal, and by advertising on porn websites, we are financially supporting abuse,”  Goyal added to explain why ads were pulled out.

In an interesting piece of trivia Media Nama mentions the places which sent the maximum response to these advertisements.

The highest clicks came from Hauz Khas, Delhi, Koramangala, Bangalore and Powai, Mumbai.

* The total cost of Ayutha Maha Chandi Yagam is estimated at Rs seven crore.

Five helipads are being built for VVIP guests led by President of India Pranab Mukherjee. KCR also personally invited his archrival Chandrababu Naidu for the ceremony.  There is a question mark over Modi's participation.

Facilities to host over 15,000 vehicles and two lakh people are being put in place.

Kitchens to feed over 50,000 people daily.

Over 101 yagna kundas (fireplaces) have been set up.

Over 2,000 priests led by six chief priests from the Sringeri mutt in Karnataka will perform the rituals.

There has been criticism on the religious extravagance at a time of drought and farmers suicides. But KCR says public funds are not being spent on the ceremony.

Landsberg prison files, which have details of Hitler’s examination by Dr Josef Brinsteiner in 1923, bring out his medical condition.

According to Nazi-era gossip, Hitler had lost a testicle in a battle during the first world war.

But the reason for the missing ball was more mundane, a birth defect called chryptorchidism, in which one or both testicles fail to descend during childhood.

Cryptorchidism, the most common birth defect of the male genitalia, affects about 3% of full-term and 30% of premature infant boys.

It is associated with reduced fertility, increased risk of testicular tumors and psychological problems.

A Hindutva poster of Bajirao Peshwa - Aakar Patel refutes popular notion

December 20, 2015, NewsCrunch

Ex-journalist and Amnesty India head Aakar Patel's Sunday coulmn in  TOI has triggered a controversy.

Commenting on the movie Baji Rao Mastani, he says it is wrong to think that Marathas -- though they fought against Mughals for long -- stood for Hindu nationalism.

Marathas were mobile warriors, who made a living by attacking other kingdoms, to extract chauth or a levy amounting to one-fourth of the vanquished state's revenue.

Like Mongols, Marathas rode on their horses, left no permanent settlements behind - just attacked, plundered and took their chauth, says Aakar Patel.

They could be particularly brutal in their intimidation.  They had no qualms in raping women or in killing pregnant women and infants.

They did not discriminate kingdoms or people on the basis of their religion. Everyone was  a target as long as chauth and rape was concerned, notes Aakar Patel.

It was under Maratha pressure, Jaipur king Ishwari Singh commited suicide by taking poison in December 1750. The popular king's death prompted Rajputs to rebel against Marathas and slaughter them.

Marathas started establishing their kingdoms only after the decline of the Mughals.

The article generated considerable heat among those who hail Marathas as icons of Hindu nationalism.

December 20, 2015, NewsCrunch

Aakar Patel's Sunday article comparing Marathas to Mongols has stirred controversy. He contends that the true interest of Marathas was in extracting a hefty tax they called chauth from Hindu and Muslim kings alike.

Aakar Patel also says that Marathas were quite brutal in their extortion, which even prompted a Rajput King Ishwari Singh to commit suicide.

Here are some more details about tragic and short reign of Maharaja Sawai Ishwari Singh.

Ishwari Singh was the elder son of a Kachwaha ruler of Jaipur, Sawai Jai Singh II.

His ascension to the throne in 1743, after his father died, was contested by his  half brother Madho Singh 1.

Ishwari Singh and Madho Singh 1 fought two battles. Both the time Ishwari Singh emerged victorious with the help of Maratha chieftains Malhar Rao Holkar and Ranoji Scindia.

In 1749 Ishwari Singh even built a victory tower Isar laat popularly known as Sarga Suli in the Tripolia Bazar.

But he was already in trouble by then. The Marathas had been collecting chauth and sardeshmukhi taxes that counted up to almost 35% of state income, for their support and services.

Ishwari Singh started defaulting on these and in 1750 Maratha army came to Jaipur to recover their taxes.

Unable to pay, Ishwari Singh ended his life on December 12, 1750 with poison. According to a legend he got himself bitten by a cobra.

Ishwari Singh was succeeded by Madho Singh 1, who went on to make his mark as a successful ruler.
But there were initial hiccups. The new ruler, his nobles and the people of Jaipur bitterly resented Maratha demand of one third or at least one fourth of the Jaipur territory.

The simmering anger of the people of Jaipur found expression in the killing of thousands of Marathas in the Jaipur city on January 10, 1751.

Madho Singh 1 managed to convince Maratha leaders of his innocence and rebuilt his relations with them.

Shatrughan Sinha and Amitabh Bachchan do not see eye to eye - their discomfort nurtured over the decades refuses to thaw.

In his new biography, Anything but Khamosh (Om Books International), Shatrughan Sinha reveals what went wrong between them.

Ironically, both of them started together in Bollywood, with Shatrughan Sinha being a little senior to Amitabh Bachchan.

They were great friends, moved in the same circle which also boasted of Mehmood's brother Anwar Ali, Anil Dhawan, Asrani and Subhash Ghai.

Shatrughan Sinha would recommend Amitabh Bachchan to his director friends and both of them together delivered hits such as Naseeb, Shaan, Dostana and Kaala Patthar.

As Amitabh Bachchan grew in towering stature, Shatrughan Sinha was one of the few actors, who held on his own,. He never let Amitabh Bachchan intimidate him and could deliver his signature performance with bluster.

“The problem was the applause I was getting for my performances... Amitabh could see the response I was getting. That’s why he didn’t want me in some of his films,” says in an excerpt of the biography published by The Outlook.

By the time Kaala Patthar, happened the duo had reached break point.

"On the sets, the chair next to Amitabh Bachchan would not be offered to me, nor would his umbrella be ever trained to cover any of us," says Shatrughan Sinha.

Then Amitabh Bachchan also tried to upstage Shatrughan Sinha in the movie.

The script held that the pre-interval clash between the two would be an equal fight that ends in Shashi Kapoor separating the two. An even fight was required as Shatrughan Sinha continues to challenge Amitabh Bachchan even after that scene.

But during shooting Shatrughan Sinha found that he was getting thrashed by Amitabh Bachchan, who had reportedly fixed the scene through fight master Shetty.

Shatrughan Sinha protested, put his foot down and stalled the shooting for a few hours till the issue was resolved, but thoroughly irking Amitabh Bachchan.

There was no turning back after that.
