Karnataka Labour Minister P T Parameshwara Naik has been caught on camera boasting that he got a senior woman police official transferred after she put his call on hold.

Deputy Superintendent of Police of Kudligi, Ballari, Anupama Shenoy had reportedly put Naik’s call on hold as she had received another call by her boss, the Superintendent of Police.

Naik, who is also the district minister of Ballari, had earlier denied that reports the he was behind Shenoy’s transfer. But a new video shows him taking the credit for shunting her out.

In the video, which has been shot on a mobile camera, Naik tells his followers about two incidents in which he felt slighted.

He had called Shenoy to find about a suicide when she put him on hold.

Prior to that,he had called her on another case. Naik says Shenoy spoke to him for just 42 seconds. “DySP  spoke to me for 42 seconds not minutes," he tells the group of party workers.

"When I called her again, she did not receive, so I have got her transferred,” he says.

Naik justifies Shenoy’s transfer ouster saying he did not want officials who do not take district Minister's phone.

Kanishka bombmaker Inderjit Singh Reyat was convicted only for manslaughter - How Canada botched the Air India 182 bombing probe

The release of Inderjit Singh Reyat brings back the traumatic memories Air India Flight 182, which was bombed on 23 June 1985 at 31,000 feet in the air. Canada's botched investigation ensured that nobody was held guilty for the ghastly crime committed by Sikh extremist group Babbar Khalsa seeking an independent Sikh homeland, Khalistan. The release of Inderjit Singh Reyat brings back the traumatic memories Air India Flight 182, which was bombed on 23 June 1985 at 31,000 feet in the air. All 329 on board, mostly Canadian Indians, perished.

Canada's botched investigation ensured that nobody was held guilty for the ghastly crime committed by Sikh extremist group Babbar Khalsa seeking an independent Sikh homeland, Khalistan. After 31 years, Canada officially maintains that the probe is still on.

Reyat, the only man who served time in jail  in relation to the Air India 182 bombing, was convicted on man slaughter and perjury charges.

The mastermind Talwinder Singh Parmar fled to India and was killed by Punjab police in 1992.

Two other arrests were made - financier of the plot Ripudaman Singh Malik and accomplice Ajaib Singh Bagri. Both were released in 2005 for lack of evidence.

Among other suspects one went missing, another died of natural causes and others were not booked at all due to lack of evidence.

To grasp Canada's failure to ensure justice, Reyat makes for a good case study.

After the bombing,  Reyat, an auto mechanic and electrician in Duncan, British Columbia, was raided along with other suspects.
|
The raid yielded explosive materials, clock, relays and tuner at his house, which he admitted had been purchased for other than "benign purposes". He also admitted that he had unsuccessfully helped Parmar build an explosive to blow up a bridge in Punjab.

Under that Canadian law, that was insufficient evidence to charge him. Reyat emigrated to England and started work at a Jaguar factory.

In he meanwhile, the probe continued and the materials found in Reyat's house were linked to a related blast at Narita, Japan, where a bomb had exploded before it could be loaded to an Air India plane, on 23 June 1985.

He was brought back to Canada and convicted on two counts of manslaughter and four explosives charges in 1991 and sentenced to 10 years in jail.

As evidence piled up against Reyat, he was arrested again in 2001 on charges of murder and conspiracy to bomb Air India 182. In 2003, Reyat pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter and a charge of aiding in the construction of a bomb.

This time he got five years in prison.

The prosecutors and even the judge found that Reyat had lied extensively under oath to protect the other accused and was tried for perjury.

In 2010, he was convicted and sentenced to nine years in prison. On January 27, Reyat was released on parole after he completed two-thirds of his sentence.

The photo was taken when Modi welcomed Hollande in Chandigarh’s Rock Garden on Monday. It shows Modi reaching out to embrace Hollande from behind.

As the photo went viral and made international news, Washington Post took note of the hug and ran a story describing Modi as a hugger of global proportions. The post’s longish headline said it all: Narendra Modi won’t stop hugging world leaders no matter how awkward it is.

The feature also recapped other eminent personalities from Obama to Zukerberg, who had suffered hugs from the overzealous Indian PM.

The Hindustan Times reports that at Rose Garden Modi was not guilty of delivering a stealth hug to Hollande.

It notes that the Hindu’s photographer Akhilesh Kumar had clicked a series of pictures in quick succession. The image which he chose to release created an impression that Modi was trying to hug Hollande from behind.

There is footage from an NDTV report on the Rose garden encounter between Modi and Hollande. Modi is shown leading Hollande gently towards the Indian and French flags to pose for photographers.

In one of the frames, for a nano second, Modi gets behind Hollande and that was captured for posterity.

In the pre-TV and pre-Net era, Indians had two ways to catch up with earthshaking breaking  news.

They turned to All India Radio to hear an official account of it or to BBC to get to know what had actually happened.

This is what Congress heir Rajiv Gandhi did when he first heard that his mother and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had been shot on October 31, 1984.

The second volume President Pranab Mukherjee’s memoirs The Turbulent Years: 1980-96 gives an account of what happened on the day Indira Gandhi was assassinated.

On the fateful day Rajiv Gandhi was in Contai, West Bengal, to address a public gathering.

As he was making his speech, at 9.30 am, Pranab Mukherjee received a message on the police wireless: ‘lndira Gandhi assaulted. Return to Delhi immediately.’

Rajiv cut short his speech and left for Delhi immediately along with Ghani Khan Choudhury, a personal security officer (PSO) and Pranab Mukherjee.

In the car, he sat in the front, beside the driver and turned on a transistor radio to listen to BBC news.

BBC informed them that sixteen bullets had been pumped into Mrs Gandhi.

Rajiv asked his PSO how potent were the bullets used by VIP security personnel and was informed that they were very powerful, according to a memoir excerpt in The Hindustan Times.

Pranab Mukherjee stepped in to console Rajiv. He pointed that BBC had got it wrong and been reporting that Pranab Mukherjee and Rajiv Gandhi were back in Delhi.

So Pranab Mukherjee reasoned that BBC had probably gone wrong in other parts of the bulletin as well.

The team drove to the helipad of the thermal power station at Kolaghat, and took a helicopter to Calcutta, where an Indian Airlines special plane was waiting.

Other officials including Uma Shankar Dikshit, then Governor of West Bengal, his daughter- in-law Sheila Dikshit, were also in the plane.

Rajiv went to the cockpit, and came out to announce that Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was dead.

Rajiv Gandhi’s decision to turn to BBC for news proved to be a good decision.

Government officials had instructed All India Radio not to broadcast Indira Gandhi’s death till Rajiv returned to Delhiand took over as Prime Minister.

In a terrifying accident at Mumbai's Borivali station last week, a middle-aged woman came under the wheels of a running train while trying to get down.

The profusely bleeding victim, who has been identified as Kirandevi Kothari, 55, was taken to a hospital, where she was declared ‘brought dead’.

The unfortunate incident took place when the Vadodara Express was pulling out of Borivali station and was captured on a CCTV camera.

Though the accident occurred on January 15, the video went viral on Whats App on Wednesday drawing media attention.

Kirandevi Kishorilal Kothari (55) and two of her relatives had boarded the Vadodara Express at Surat, and were heading to Mumbai to visit a relative.

Railway officials said the group had some confusion on its  destination and delayed deboarding at the Borivali station, where the train stops  for only two minutes.

The CCTV footage shows a woman jumping off first, followed by a man who was Kothari's nephew. After he pulls out the luggage, the orange saree-clad Kothari gets down.

Unable to land safely from the moving train, she slips and slides into the gap between the train and the platform. Her nephew tries to pull her out, but in vain.

Railway police told The Indian Express that the train was immediately stopped and reversed to rescue the victim. She was rushed to the hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Kothari had sustained injuries and was bleeding heavily from her mouth and nose.

Hrithik- Kangana war breaks out - Would rather have an affair with Pope, than her, tweets Junior Roshan

Hrithik tweeted on Thursday that there were more chances of him having had an affair with the Pope than with any of the women media had linked him to. "Thanks but no thanks," he added. He did not name anyone and it seems to be a response to a nasty comment Kangana had recently made against an ex boy friend, and again, without naming anyone. That was widely seen as a remark against Hrithik.
While Kangana was emotional about him, Hrithik for some reason was not willing to commit to her.

January 29, 2016, NewsCrunch

Hrithik Roshan and Kangana Ranaut have gone public with their ire, giving meat to a longstanding gossip that both had a bitter fallout after a short fling last year.

Though without naming each other, they have broken the Bollywood's golden rule of not commenting on personal relationship or on ex partners.

Hrithik tweeted on Thursday that there were more chances of him having had an affair with the Pope than with any of the women media had linked him to.

"Thanks, but no thanks," he added.

He did not name anyone, but the tweet seems to be a response to a nasty comment Kangana had recently made against an ex boy friend, and again, without naming anyone. That was widely seen as a  remark against Hrithik.

Hrithik is considering an offer to star in Aashiqui 3. During discussions with T-Series, the producer of the movie, he reportedly insisted that Kangana, who was also being considered, would have to be dropped.

It may have been just a rumour given that Hrithik himself is yet to commit to the project. But that did not stop motormouth Kangana from reacting.

She told Miss Malini website that even a "dumb ass could figure out where these rumours were coming from" and put the blame on an ex boyfriend.

"I don’t know why exes do silly things to get your attention. For me that chapter is over and I don’t dig graves,” she commented.

Hrithik and Kangana built a good friendship when they came together for the 2013 movie Krish 3. After Hrithik and Susanne  divorced, they dated last year for sometime, but fell out quickly.

While it is said that Kangana was emotional about him, Hrithik for some reason was not willing to commit to her. He not only avoided any public appearance with her, but also went out of his way to dismiss all talks of an affair as trash.

January 29, 2016, NewsCrunch

Katrina Kaif has reportedly denied that it cost Rs 55 lakh to get her hair coloured red for her upcoming movie Fitoor.

The red shade meant to match the colour of chinar tree leaves of Kashmir is her signature look in the movie.

A tweet sent by her fan club says she spoke to India Today on Thursday denying the report,  though the publication is yet to air the interview.

There was outrage on Thursday after a spate of media reports said - all without any confirmation - that Fitoor producer had spent Rs 55 lakh on Katrina's hair.

One report said 200 poor kids could have been given college education with the same amount.

Fitoor director Abhishek Kapoor wants to capture the soul of Kashmir in the movie, a Dickensian love story. So, he was particular that the Chinar shades come out  in Katrina's hair colour.

According to the media reports, the filmmakers had to fly Katrina to London as none of the Indian hairstylists could get the exact shade.  The cost of monthly first class travel and five star accommodation in London reportedly ran up the bill to Rs 55 lakh.

There are many holes in the story. It is outright silly to say Indian hairstylists were not able produce the wanted hair colour.

London is Katrina's hometown, where her mother and siblings live in a huge bungalow at Hampstead, which she bought after making it big in Bollywood.

She is extremely close to them and why would she stay in a five star hotel while in London.

A video, which captures the fiasco of a walk-in interview at HCL campus, Electronic City, Bangalore, has emerged.

Over 8,000 graduates turned up for the walk-in interview last Sunday, forcing HCL officials to cancel the recruitment exercise.

A video shot on a bike shows a mile-long queue on the Velankanni Road leading up to the HCL office, where it was totally jammed with engineering graduates.

The incident was projected by the media as yet another evidence of growing unemployment among the educated youth in the country.

There was also a subplot to the story – a case of gross mismanagement by HCL officials, which left many aspirants who had come from  places as far as Lucknow, disappointed.

According to Bangalore Mirror, HCL had 1,200 vacancies for Engineer Trainees with an annual package of 2.75 lakh.

There was nothing unusual in 8,000 engineering graduates turning up for interview – the vacancy-applicant ratio was a reasonable, less than 1:8.

HCL slipped in underestimating the response or in planning logistics to manage the crowd.

Mirror also quoted an official saying HCL overlooked a legal requirement to inform local police if it was expecting a crowd of more than 500.

The long queue and the cancellation of the recruitment led to unruly scenes. It took the full might of CISF men with lathis to get the situation in control.

Women were shown both a composite 'fertile' face (left) and a composite 'less fertile' face (right)
January 29, 2016, NewsCrunch

Scientists have found that women have an uncanny ability to spot other women, who are ovulating by just looking at their faces.

Evolution seems to have bestowed this talent to help them hold on to their partners and fend off competition.

Researchersat the University of Bern, Switzerland, did a series of experiments, involving 220 women, to explore if they could spot ovulating women.

These women were shown images of other women taken in their fertile and non-fertile phases.

And they were asked to pick the image which posed potential competition to entice away their partners. Many participants were able to make the correct choice.

A subset of the participating women were 'naturally cycling' with higher levels of oestradiol levels, a type of oestrogen produced in the ovaries.

These women were remarkably able to choose the fertile face, which could compete with them.

The finding is in line with studies finding positive associations between oestradiol levels and competitive behaviour among women.

Earlier experiments have showed that men find fertile faces attractive. Women have been subjected to these experiments for the first time.

In the increasingly polarised debates Indians are slipping into, Mahatma Gandhi is conspicuously absent.

Gandhi, rightfully has his share of detractors; but in the present situation, there is more in his legacy to heal than to divide.

As the British also came to acknowledge, Gandhi was a Mahatma.

In leading his people to freedom, he made his own path, learnt his own lessons and made an effort to teach them to others.

Indians may have no use for the Father of their Nation, but in the global mind he continues to be a moving spiritual force.

It was widely related that Malaik-Arjun affair started around 2011
and lasted for two or three years.

January 30, 2016, NewsCrunch

Emerging Bollywood star Arjun Kapoor is allegedly the man behind Malaika's split from her husband Arbaaz Khan, despite rumours that a British businessman has come into the picture.

The couple had drifted apart over the last two years and become estranged.

The rift was clear in the shooting of the TV show Power Couple during which Arbaaz and Malaika were barely on talking terms. Malaika did not turn up after a few episodes, forcing Arbaaz to manage it alone.

Spotboye, a well informed Bollywood website, reported on Friday that Malaika had shifted to an apartment at Khar along with son Arhaan.

SpotBoye again reported on Saturday saying the finger is being pointed at Arjun for the split.

Arjun, who was dating Malaiká's sister-in-law Arpita, was also linked with her. It was widely related that Malaik-Arjun affair started around 2011 and lasted for two or three years.

In a 2014 interview Malaika dismissed it as false but also admitted that Arbaaz had discussed the issue with her.

January 30, 2016, NewsCrunch

Nathuram Vinayak Godse shot Mahatma Gandhi in the chest three times at point blank range in New Delhi on 30 January 1948.

In the aftermath of partition, he thought Gandhi was weakening Hindus in their fight against Muslims and sought to eliminate him.

Many have tried to explain the different nuances of Godse’s assassination of Gandhi.

In his 1991 book, At The Edge of Psychology, Ashish Nandy looks into the mind of Godse, exploring possible influences he was exposed to, which prepared him to assassinate the Father of the Nation.

Writing in Scroll, Ajaz Ashraf provides a succinct summary of Nandy’s complex psychoanalysis of Godse.

Nathuram Vinayakrao Godse was born in a village near Pune and was named Ramachandra. Before he was born, his parents had three sons and a daughter. All three boys had died young, while the girl had survived.

Fearing for Godse’s life, his parents raised him as a girl, even having his nose pierced and making him wear a nose-ring. It was only after a younger brother was born, they switched to treating Godse as a boy.

But by then the nickname "Nathuram" (literally "Ram with a nose-ring") had stuck and would stay with him for a lifetime. His urge to get away from possible humiliating memories of childhood and assert his masculinity would be a recurring theme in his life.

He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, only to quit as it was not militant enough. He would find his peers in Savarkar’s Hindu Mahasabha, whose other prominent members were also accused in Gandhi’s murder.

Godse started a newspaper, Hindu Rashtra, which opposed Gandhi alleging he was turning Hindus effeminate with pacifism and nonviolence.

In the all-out bloodletting during partition, Godse thought Gandhi was holding  back Hindus. So, he decided upon what he perhaps thought was a macho line of action – killing Mahatma in the open and facing the consequences for that.

He made no attempt to run after shooting Gandhi, himself shouted "police" and surrendered. During his trial, he asked the court not to show any mercy and hang him.

There were other strands of thought in Godse. He wanted to unify Hindus as a monolithic group, which would counter the perceived aggression of Islam and Christianity.

But Nandy’s psychoanalysis gives an important key to grasp his mind.

As Ashraf quotes Nandy: “Perhaps it was given in the situation that Nathuram would try to regain the lost clarity of his sexual role by becoming a model of masculinity.”

The video, shot in different parts of India, including Mumbai, offers a heavy-dose of religion and enchantment.

But the video did not go down well with the Indian fans who found it too stereotypical and exotic for their taste.

NDTV journalist Sreenivasan Jain called it clichéd. IBN Live counted 19 “exotic clichés” in the video which reinforce the way the West likes to look at India.

Even Beyonce’s appearance with henna on hands and in an ethnic outfit and jewellery was dismissed as jaded.  Another gripe was on the cameo by Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor, who has just a fleeting presence in the video.

He compared Rohith’s accomplishment with the credentials of the Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani, whom he described as a college dropout.

Criticising Irani as the worst education minister ever, Sainath also made fun of her  Yale university certificate course, which she had mistaken as a degree.

In his 20 minute long speech, Sainath spoke about how the country’s institutions were becoming elitist and urged the students to oppose the trend.

Airlift  is unlikely to catch up with Dilwale's Rs 350 crore-plus performance
January 31, 2016, NewsCrunch

Airlift, Akshay Kumar's magnum opus, has failed to match Shahrukh Khan movie Dilwale's first week box office performance.

Airlift, which released on January 22, made Rs 83.5 crore in domestic market and Rs 26.5 crore overseas in the first seven days.

After seven days, Shahrukh Khan's Dilwale had made Rs 102 crore and Rs 80 crore respectively.

But Dilwale's domestic collection dipped drastically after first week as it was hit by bad reviews and also by the intolerance controversy.

Airlift had a good run till Jan 26 and dropped after that. It may get a weekend bump and keep its momentum thanks to word of mouth  buzz.

But it is unlikely to catch up with Dilwale's Rs 350 crore-plus performance, which kicked in due to a  stunning overseas performance.

The central government wants to change the name and spelling of India's sacred language from "Sanskrit" to "Samskrit" .

The UGC has decided to shift the nomenclature following a recommendation by a 13-member expert committee, headed by former chief election commissioner N. Gopalaswami.

The Telegraph reports that a recent circular sent by UGC to higher education institutions and universities follows the new spelling, "Samskrit".

There seems to be wide support to changing the spelling as Sanskrit was a distortion introduced by the British and has been in use only in the last 200 years.

Telegraph quotes Jnanpith award winner Satya Vrat Shastri saying the correct spelling should be "Samskrita," which is still in vogue in many Indian languages.

But for now the government seems content to stop at  "Samskrit".
